I have no idea what I just bought.
Yeah I bought this last time it came around, and I agree that it's worth buying. For you old heads like me, it is not just crappy reverb "tech" like we saw for a couple decades. It enables object-based rendering of audio for your headphones (you can get another version of it for free by enabling Windows Sonic for Headphones). So instead of just left vs right, it renders a bullet as an object moving in space amongst other objects, using the newer API that Microsoft exposed for 3D audio rendering. It's good for supported games, and doesn't ruin or hurt games that don't support it. Movies are MUCH better with it. Night and day. I got Dolby over DTS just because Dolby is more widespread (Netflix premium plans etc). I leave it enabled all the time and never disable it. And the license is perpetual. Do it.
It should work just fine on home theater setups without the need to purchase a license, only costs money if using with headphones.

I got this and enable it for my stereo speakers. Not sure if you're supposed to but they seem to "sound better" haha. Could be my imagination though.

I have been wanting them to do something like this for DDL, digital Dolby live, and what that does is encode 5.1 into 2 channels. HDMI has some issues where it might say a surround sound device is stereo when it can do 5.1. so I'm not sure if Atmos would fix that. And what's even crazier is most onboard sound chips have been capable of this for a long time, but it's the Dolby license stopping it. So who knows if MS is using the hardway or doing this in software

Is this just for headphones? Any way to add it to TV Home theater?

Me neither using headphones on the PC but playing mostly older games like Black Mesa, Max Payne 3 and even Doom Eternal which is not that old. I checked the list of supported games and it's still pretty short for right now. I will say the demo sounds awesome (so I can rule out my headphones which are decent). I'm going to download one of the newer Tomb Raider games that do support it and hopefully enjoy the fireworks or rather the symphony

Can anyone explain what this is? I've followed audio for more than 40 years and this seems like a product that has never existed before. I have an Xbox but run it through my receiver, what would this do in that case?

Is this for Xbox or just PC? Will one license work on both?

It came with my PC which I've had for a couple of years. It has an equalizer you can set, but most music applications probably have that anyway. At some point it started doing this weird thing where the volume would go up or down depending on which application I used (it was mainly an annoyance). I ended up setting it to music then disabling to make that go away. I guess if you use your PC for home theater it might be worth something.

You will have to adjust it through the app and make sure your soundcard is set to Dolby as the processor. It will default to Windows Sonic.

The better your audio setup the better it will sound.
