General warning for would-be buyers who were huge fans of the original Super Meat Boy but don't know much about this game...this game is NOTHING LIKE SUPER MEAT BOY. None.

It bears no resemblance to the original game that you loved except for aesthetically. If you go into this expecting a Super Meat Boy game, you will be tragically disappointed.

This is an endless runner style game. If you like that kind of game, maybe this is a good example of one. I am not sure, I do not particularly like that genre of game so I'm not a good judge. I almost never do this, but I actually bought this game completely on impulse when I saw that it had released, based purely on name. Then I found out that I had been bait-and-switched and they slapped the Super Meat Boy name on a game that has nothing to do with Super Meat Boy.

As long as you are aware of all that, and are open to paying money for an endless runner, then by all means go for it. But I think it's really a necessary disclaimer because they don't really make this clear in their marketing stuff.

Saw it the other day on sale, almost scooped it and glad I didn't after reading it was a code in a box. Plush is super dope though.

For physical game collectors there is only a code for this game in the box, no cart.

As an indie game enthusiast, I wanted to contribute by saying something similar. I don't know the full ownership of things, but in layman's terms, Edmund McMillen, who is the creator of the character, is no longer part of the team that deals with this character (Team Meat). Please do not use this post as a primary source.

McMillen was involved in the creation of Super Meat Boy Forever before he left, though, and co-creator/programmer of the original Tommy Refenes still led the sequel. It's not like some random company got the rights and did their own thing.

Also, it's not an endless runner in the traditional sense. You can't stop running, true, but there are distinct levels and even bosses to complete. It's more Super Mario Run than it is Jetpack Joyride.

Good and worthwhile clarification, certainly. Like I said I really don't care for runner-style games so if I misidentified the subgenre a bit that is my bad.

The point I wanted to drive home is that this game bears no resemblance to the original game. If you did nothing but look at screenshots and read about this game, you could easily decide to buy this without realizing that. In fact that is what I did, and while I didn't feel ripped off exactly (my own choice to buy it after all), I did feel like the game descriptions and media are intentionally misleading in not making it clear that this game is an entirely separate genre.

The original SMB was a cult classic and sort of defined its own little niche genre...and I believe it gained the popularity it did based very strongly on the specifics of its gameplay loop. This game has none of that. There's a reason a lot of people don't even know that a sequel to SMB came out...it's just got nothing to do with the original and clearly didn't capture people's attention in the same way. To me it felt like a mobile game.
