Need something to replace my surface book OG. Will this be a huge upgrade? Portability is not too big of concern for me.

This is a mini not an air/laptop/convertible. Completely different machines.

No shit. They are both computers though aren't they?
Ok rude but you would use the mini as a desktop/htpc and the surface is portable. One doesn't really replace the other now does it? Maybe the better question is what are the uses you are looking to give to your new computer? That way better advice can be given.

Am I too early for the 8GB x 16GB RAM fights?

Ok, I'll come back latter.

What do you guys do with the Mac Mini? I'm not a creative professional and I've only upgraded MacBooks where I poked around with the shell.

Trying to decide if I should get a mini or a macbook air.... thinking of going more for the air since I will be able to undock from monitors and take with me travel or around the home... why would someone get this over a macbook?

I bought that one. Second year of warranty included. Got it in 2 days, I didn't see that there was a code for same day.

Quite a bit of computer for the $. I was looking at lower end windows machines that can actually play a high bitrate 4k youtube video without dropping frames. Seems the celerons from the 10th/11th generation aren't very good at that. The N5105 is the only one that has enough gpu execution units to run it.

I hadn't really looked into the m1 chip at all, and the thing I noted was the # of people reviewing it that said they sold their intel macs before the prices cratered and bought an m1 mini until something better came along, and now are asking if they really need anything better.

Looks to me like the best igpu around, as good or better than intel/amd's igp's. The cpu seems to run well ahead of the 10th gen i7's.

Not really seeing why just about anyone looking to spend <$600 on a competent, fast, low electric demand, low heat computer that wants to do a bit of everything would go with anything else. I bought it for a bedroom media center machine. Now I'm wondering if it's going to leave my living room!

-Lower cost

-More ports

-Smaller footprint on a desk. Especially when being used with an external monitor

-Better thermal management for a slight performance increase over the MBA

-Don't have to worry about battery degradation over time if you're always plugged in at a desk

I'm a life long windows guy that's dipped into macs, but not recently. The value proposition just wasn't there, and I'm a cheapo!

I set this up with chrome, within a few hours I was doing everything that I normally do.

This is a rare system that isn't a power hungry one but performs with the bigger systems with more expensive cpus.

One really nice part is the ios apps for the ipad run on it seamlessly. So the handful of apps I needed bluestacks for to run under windows 11 (the apps are NOT in the amazon app store) installed and run like another mac app.

Sweet. So any typical computing needs up to a midrange to upper end windows machine would do, with less electricity. Great as a media streamer/htpc.

8 GB ram in this. is plenty unless you know your applications need more.

256GB of internal SSD is also plenty. A usb-c 3.2 external drive or thunderbolt drive/docking station with external nvme storage is way cheaper than paying more for apple storage.

My opinion is that they made this imac a little bit TOO good for the price. Pretty sure that's the first time I've said that about an apple product.

Considering you can edit 4 Simultaneous 4k videos at the same time in premier, davinci resolve and Final Cut Pro with the 8gb model, that defeats the question as to spending the extra 200 on 16gb memory. I doubt anybody here would be putting the mini through a workload like that. I personally wouldn't edit much outside of 1080p.

Also with seeing these deals on the air and mini pop up recently I'm wondering if we are gonna see a new mini and MacBook Air in the coming weeks and months? 🤔

Database management can have high ram requirements without needing a more powerful CPU. I use a program that is only on Mac and I find myself wanting an OG M1 with 64 GB RAM. Since Apple doesn't have that option I am being forced into looking at the Studio.

For what it's worth, the unified RAM in these little beasts seems to follow a 150% rule. A task that used 12 GB of RAM on an intel Mac will likely only need 8 GB on an M1. YMMV, of course.
