I got a free PC from a friend, how do I know if this is compatible? Pretty tech savvy but it's been a minute since I messed with PC hardware.

Check your motherboard specs to see if it has any M.2 slots and if it will fit a 2280 device. 2280 is a fancy way of saying 22mm wide and 80mm long.

You'll also want to check if you have an m.2 slot that it supports nvme. Otherwise you'll be limited to sata speeds. A little over 500MB/s read and 450MB/s write.

If the mobo is from the last ~3 years, it probably does. I have some ~5 year old Z190 boards that have sata m.2 slots. The nvme drive will go in, but run at just sata speeds.

I recently bought a new HP PC with a 256GB NVMe M.2 SSD in the only M.2 slot on the motherboard. How can I clone the current SSD over to this larger SSD? TIA for any help.

You need an NVMe slot with PCIe lanes for this drive, its not compat with SATA.

Not sure what all other drives might support either mode but this drive does not support SATA.

You might find yourself a bit surprised. Because as I said, I have an m.2 slot in a z-190that takes a 2280, will accept an nvme, but just runs at sata speeds.

That was the case with an SK-Hynix oem nvme drive AND a Hynix gold p31 nvme drive.

Install the new ssd then put the current ssd into a usb enclosure. Then load clonezilla onto a usb stick and boot to it and clone it.

I'm surprised we're seeing these still at retail... The 670p is a better drive and has been cheaper. I guess it's a "good deal," but I'd still look for a 670p at this price. If you need RAM, there's also a Team Group GEN 4 SSD bundle deal on Amazon right now that's pretty great.
