Amazon still mixes its own inventory with third party inventory.

Edit: why thumb down on a fact? Amazon mixes their own and third party (FBA) inventory to basically use them as cost-free safety stock at the expense of potentially selling counterfeits.

You're absolutely dead wrong. They co mingle their own stock with 3rd party stock they keep at their warehouses. You really think they have some magical special place where only items that came from the manufacturer are placed? Everything is based on barcode and if it scans correctly it goes into the box shipped to you. It doesn't matter where it came from. Otherwise how would you explain the numerous reports of people getting fake memory cards shipped directly from Amazon? And Amazon doesn't care one lick about your fake memory card if they can make billions charging sellers AND buyers. And as anecdotal evidence when I brought up my issue with my fake card that I bought directly from Amazon they couldn't have cared less. Since it was past 30 days they initially refused to do anything. I had to elevate it several times until I finally received a refund. And they didn't care one bit that the issue was that I had received a fake memory card shipped directly from them. I was surprised until I did some digging and found this was a huge widespread problem and that they know about it but don't do anything about it. Sure they'll throw a bunch of 3rd party sellers under the bus and ban them and god forbid some poor sap that makes a living as a third party seller be one of those people. Their entire source of income is gone in a flash with no recourse and Amazon pats themselves on the back for stopping counterfeit goods while willfully continuing a practice that lets counterfeit goods permeate their own stock. Just so they can double charge people.

Oh yeah and when I wrote a review stating that Amazon sold me a counterfeit memory card they took the review down. So take that what it's worth. Didn't they just ban some major third party manufacturers for encouraging people to leave a review? As far as I know they couldn't selectively delete negative reviews yet Amazon does exactly that….

Yep. Been burned before. Bought from directly Amazon. Didn't know until a year later. It doesn't matter they know about this issue but don't care. They continue to comingle their stock with 3rd party sellers. I only buy from Best Buy and B&H now.

This would go perfect with my hacked switch. I wonder if it can handle it though.

How does one determine counterfeit sd cards? Like they spoof the storage or just the design?

When my dad got our first ibm compatible, a 386, it had a 80MB drive in it. I was in awe. Standard at the time in the pc magazines I read for a good buildout like that was 40MB. We were running dos for long time before windows 3.1, so space was never an issue. I couldn't even fit a tiny fraction of the junk newsletter emails I never bother to delete on that now.

To summarize: Ignorance is no excuse. The return policy is there as a crutch to make things right in the event something goes wrong with the standard business practices of consuming goods.
What about ignorance on the multibillion dollar companies end? What about willful ignorance? What about complicity in procuring and distributing fake goods that harms the consumer and the economy? Why should the onus be on the customer to check for fake products from a company like Amazon who could easily implement policies to prevent this from happening? Why doesn't any of the responsibility lie with them?

You're only half right on this. Amazon doesn't mix inventory in their warehouses. However, they will fulfill a notionally identical item from a seller's stock if the "sold by Amazon" stock is depleted. In this case, if you got a counterfeit, they would be able to identify the source and shut them down.
There have been multiple articles that have been published from multiple sources that state otherwise. They do mix inventory in their warehouses and they don't distinguish which product came from which sources. If it has the barcode and scans it gets picked and put in your box and shipped to you no matter where it came from.

I've bought 3 cards in the past 6 months all checked out fine. all sold by Amazon. This fake stuff apparently isn't as widespread as everyone makes believe.

How did you find out your card was counterfeit?

No one said it was widespread.

Just knowing there ARE counterfeit items allowed in the system is enough to steer me clear.

My luck isn't good enough to risk it.
