Love seeing these prices drop and inventories are finally lasting more than 10 minutes from hitting slick deals The 6600 is a solid entry level card, but personally the 3060 was a much better deal at only $30 more yesterday. Sold out today, but they have been coming back in stock every couple of days or so at EVGA.

The problem is with newer gens the lower tiered budget cards are always released a lot later than the flagships.

Also there's no guarantee of stock for the 40 series. Don't forget when the 30 series was announced people were selling their 2080tis for like $500 for a few weeks before they shot. back up to double that because of how hard it was to get a 30 series card

Entry level cards like these will get you by for a couple of years. Obviously if you can wait up to a year for the next gen mid-tier cards to become available at decent prices, then wait. You can also wait for some better deal that will be coming for a current gen card. Really depends on your usage and what rig you have going...and how much patience you have. I personally was able to pick up a 6600 for $300 and a 6600 XT for $420 and find the 6600 to be a better value as performance was within 15% of each other.

Everything I'm reading is unless you have no other options or money is no object it is best to wait until the next card refresh, due to the insane leap in performance that will come with the next generation? So entry level cards, like these, to get you by for now.

I got in line early for the AMD direct sale, but didn't pull the trigger. The 6700xt for $489 peeked my attention (but ram only runs at 196bits). I still think better option is the 3060 TI for less. Every Thursday around 9am(EST) AMD's gates open. Spent 30 minutes in their Virtual line. I might grab a 6800 for $579 next time. That is a solid performer with 16gb at 256bit . I am in no hurry at this time.

I wouldn't recommend it. My 8370 was bottle-necking just my gtx 970. Money would be better spent migrating to a ryzen CPU. There have been some great CPU and CPU/mobo combo deals this week

Take a look at this video jayz2cents did about this very question. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dioUVOCCndY

He ran a AM3 FX6100 with a high end GPU and it still managed to run pretty good.

Is this much of an upgrade from the 8gb rx 480 I bought for $199 6 years ago?

It kinda depends on what you are looking for. Generally the CPU is more important the lower res and higher frame rate you are looking for. So if you are wanting to play at 1080p at 150+fps your old CPU will probably be limiting you a fair bit. On the other hand if you are looking to play WQHD or 4k you'll probably be limited by the video card anyway and not see as much or any difference with a better CPU. My understanding is that AMD generally tends to be better performance on slower CPUs too compared to NVIDIA.

Something like double the performance (which application and all that matters), fully supported by AMDs drivers and an optimization target architecturally courtesy of PS5/Xbox so there is that.
