I think this is one of the best Portables out there. This Reddit post was very helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/homeowne..._hose_and/

Here is a comment I made here earlier on my understanding between dual and single hose (I think dual is better in most cases) and the advantage of an inverter. BTW, the heater is not the main attraction here. Its not so great:

"Dual hose with inverter (and heat) $599 Model #RAC-PT1411HWRU

This is the best. And dual hose system is more economical.

Single hose with inverter alternative:
Best single hose with inverter" LG LP1419IVSM Air Conditioner you can find these used on offer up for $300-400. New $600 plus.

Unfortunately, $400 range models or less are junk.

The single hose models create negative pressure in your room by sucking hot outside air into your room (through cracks under doors or wherever it can draw outside air) and into the unit to cool which then spits half out the window hot air and half cold into your room. It continues to suck hot air from outside to feed the unit for cooling. Its a really dumb setup. Its one big loop of hot air coming in from outside to be re-cooled.

Dual hose systems suck air in from a tube from the window, cools the innards of the system and sends its hot air back out the window. It pulls air from your room, cools it, and then pushes it back out into the room and re-cools it. You have two separate loops of air with a dual. The hot side loops outside. The cool side loops inside. Efficient.

Single hose systems do work. I would not use one in smokey environments.

Inverter models allows the pump to run at different speeds-slow and quiet is available. Non-inverters run only one loud speed, full blast, and cycle off and on to regulate temperature. It goes on and off, on and off, on and off always on full when on.

Pro tip: do not tip or lay down your air conditioner during shipping or any other time. If it was tipped, set it upright for at least 24 hrs to let refrigerant settle and not destroy your compressor.."
This Toshiba unit is made by Midea, as discussed in that Reddit thread linked in the reply by wildsage123. I own 2 portable ACs and I agree this newer design is as good as it gets right now. I'm in for 1.

Quick explanation of why this is better than the separate dual hose, is the dual hose ends up emitting some of that heat back into your room since the hoses are not insulated. After all, they are just plastic hoses. This dual hose puts the hot air exhaust hose inside of the outside air intake hose. This helps to insulate that exhaust heat hose from emitting as much heat back into your room.
It has everything included. The only thing that looked used was the remote. It looked pretty scratchy. For whatever reason, the unit itself is very well protected, but the accessories are just thrown together in a separate little box sitting on top of the unit. The remote may have shipped in pristine condition and rattled around in shipping, getting all scratched up. The unit itself was immaculate. The hose looks brand new. I'll see if I can get some pictures.

Edit: Pictures added!

I just checked and right now Wal-Mart is showing these back in stock for $419.00. I never did get the heat to work on mine though, even after following all of the suggestions in this thread.

Unfortunately, I wasn't as lucky as some of you, mine was a mess. The remote was scratched up and very dirty. The unit was also dirty and had yellow residue along the back where the filter would sit, which was also warped so it wouldn't sit flush, and the metal fins/blades were discolored.. I'm guessing it was used in a high humidity area, and by people with grubby hands.

I also purchased a new one from Home Depot which was missing a couple of parts, which led me to experience Toshiba support because I thought it would be easier than returning it for a replacement. It wasn't. Toshiba's support is terrible. Hope you all have better luck.

I've been using mine for about a month and have been happy with it.
  • The unit has compressor protection that prevents it from turning on immediately after changing modes. Therefore, if you turn on the unit in cool mode and immediately switch to heat mode, then it'll wait several minutes before outputting heat. To get around this, change to the desired operating mode on the remote before turning on the unit.
  • If you have some leftover non-adhesive foam (the thick one provided to seal behind the open window), I suggest cutting small pieces of it and inserting it where the hose end clicks into the window panel to seal small air leaks.
  • I preferred not to apply the adhesive seal to the window edge, because I didn't want to affect the window operation. Instead, I bought 3/4" weather-strip and applied it to the long edges of the window panel. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Frost.../100117691
If you missed the deal, Costco recently starting selling an identical Midea version for $549.99. It's new and comes with a 2 year warranty. Note that the 12,000 BTU advertised is SACC, but if you search the model number, it's actually the 14,000 BTU unit like the Toshiba one.

Thanks for letting us know about the midea. I was planning to get the Toshiba, but got worried with some of the issues. I started looking at the Danby version at Costco, but the midea, which is 4-1 and cheaper, seems like a good alternative.

I have central air, but don't want to cool my whole house at night. I had a refurbished midea u shaped ac on order from Amazon for over 3 months, which I probably won't receive.

I see that these are back in stock now.
So even though I repaired the LCDI wire on mine, I notice that when the compressor kicks on the inverter makes a high pitch/frequency sound. Apparently this is common for inverters and might be a frequency that only certain people can hear, but it is very annoying to me.

I am ordering another one to see if I have any better luck. Hopefully they don't just send me someone one of you previously returned 🙄. If I do get one in good shape, I'll just swap the unit I fixed into the return. So that I can keep my $336 purchase price.

Good luck. In the event the swap doesn't work, you might try insulating the plastic cabinet pieces with Dynamat or some similar product. There seems to be plenty of space in most areas to add extra insulation on the inside.

Received my unit over the weekend and just got around to unboxing. Sharing my experience so far compared to others...

My unit did not have a fresh unit smell at all. The box had a slight barn odor to it. Was definitely used or inspected based on the repacking job and condition of the packing materials inside. Foam was broken, cardboard was slightly beat up, and tape job outside the box slightly messy. Fwiw the address it shipped from said "return center". There were a couple pieces of hair on the unit and in the box, but nothing too disgusting. The casing around the unit had some slight scuff marks, but overall in good condition, and fairly clean. Filter was clean and exhaust hose seems clean. Grill fins behind filter had some slight dents/damage, but 90% intact.

All the components in the refurbished user manual were present. Note there a few more accessories in a brand new model (see full user manual on Home Depot). Drain hose was slightly yellow-ish and completely bent in half. Remote was brand new and sealed in plastic wrapper. The only thing missing was one of the drain cover caps on the back. Asking Walmart if they have a spare.

The outlet louver was slightly slanted and not aligned. Upon closer inspection, the metal knob that holds it in place had popped out on one side. It seems like a couple users also had this issue (thanks for the heads up). I gently pushed the louver to one side and maneuvered the knob back into the groove.

Will finish installing and finally testing it in the next several next days. Debating whether to use the adhesive foam seal or something else. Don't want to mess up windows or leave residue when it comes time to remove the seal.

How is everyone planning on draining this unit? Continuous drain from the top outlet (which means buying a hose adapter)? Or drain only when it beeps using the bottom tray outlet?

I recommend returning and repurchasing it. Mine came in like new condition in the original box. The only signs that it was refurbished were some scuffs on the exterior, slightly dirty window panels, and a bit of dirt on the air intake (easily wiped up after removing the hose). The coils/fins were completely clean and looked unused.

I live in an area where the humidity rarely goes above 55% and I have not had to drain when running in A/C mode. When running in heat mode, draining from the middle outlet (as described in the manual) is a must. I attached the included clear drain hose by dipping it in hot water to soften the plastic first, then attaching it to the drain outlet directly. After running in heat for a few hours, I can hear a pump turn on to remove the collected moisture. If I remember the manual correctly, the top drain outlet is only for use in dry mode.

I have both a Midea U window A/C and this Toshiba portable A/C. Both of them make the high pitched sound when starting. I don't believe another unit would behave any differently.

Thanks for sharing that. When it starts up it is absolutely most noticeable but the high pitch sound does continue the entire time the compressor runs.

Depending on the condition of this other one that I ordered, I'm hoping that maybe at the very least I could swap out the PSU/Inverter if it's any better. But if it doesn't work out then no big deal I will just return it and then try to dampen the sound of my existing one, and live with it.

I'm still not sure I agree that the compressor for these units are amazingly quiet by any means. So I hope to compare that too.

Otherwise I am pretty pleased with how well it is doing so far at cooling my room. Next week with 90 degree weather will be the better test though

I put my unit on a 4" wood pedestal (2x4"s with a couple planks) and its easy to put a tub below to drain.

I walked into my living room and the floor fan was blaring. I first thought it was the AC. I had to walk all the way up to the AC (cooling on high) to hear it at all over the box fan. Just for comparison, my AC is not even close to half as loud as a standard floor box fan on high.

Deal is still on at Walmart. I ordered a second one. Hopefully it doesn't smell chemically bad and will not come all beat up like my first one. I have the 90 days to return the original.

But, now i am considering the Costco deal. If i had membership, I would cancel the Walmart and immediately buy the Costoco- with 2 year warranty and NEW sounds good.

Otherwise, second time around, hoping for a better model from Walmart and I am SERIOUSLY eyeing that 4-year warranty for $80.

I don't normally do warranties, but in this case I am comparing costs of a new one with 2 year warranty (Costco) vs this used/refurb with 4 year warranty. Seems, Walmart wins if the device works properly from the get-go with no signs of abuse.

I read the Walmart 4-year warranty is on-site repair or replace (Walmart posted appliance warranties work that way). So no packing it up if it goes south. Don't quote me on that, as I read that on a separate page than the warranty page. I assume it applies to this deal.

Finally, I report, the chemical smell is a lot less after running the AC a few days. it still smells like chemical outside where it vents.

But, this unit is dented up. That means internal components could be compromised long term, hence, I am buying another one to replace it.

So weird. The AC was working great, now tonight it does not seem like the compressor is turning on. I'm not sure what the issue is.

Edit- ah, like the above poster said, it takes a few minutes to kick in.

Thank you dthlin and wildsage123 for the drain feedback and drain setup ideas.

Yep, the manuals and youtube videos says the top drain outlet is for use in dry mode. The only exception is in the Q&A Home Depot page (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Toshi.../314730948), where a Toshiba rep recommends using the top drain for both in cool and dry modes, with the exception that you do not need to continuous drain in cool mode if humidity is low. Do not know where the rep got the top drain/cool mode info from. Regardless the Q&A is a pretty nice resource being able to search with keywords, and ask questions.

Btw, if anyone is missing a top or middle drain cap like I was, this worked perfectly.

This is very enticing, I got a Hisense dual hose portable last year from Costco but these inverter units seems more quiet than mine. Luckily I can return mine at any time so maybe I'll bite on this one. Costco has inverter's but costs $580 and $540.

Reporting: That intense chemical smell I reported on last week is now gone, thankfully. I have ran it about 60 hours.
