I think that this is a different game than the one you are describing. Reviews state that Ares Expedition is streamlined and can be played in an hour. This is not OG Terraforming Mars.

That's a better deal than the publisher had at PAX Unplugged

Love this game but it's THICC. First game took us about 4.5 hours with relatively experienced board gamers. There's an extended game mode which has become an inside joke because of how ludicrous the concept of extending the game is. Overall though, very fun and cool art. Make sure to play futuristic music while playing.

It isn't usually very streamlined. It's suppose to be. Played it about 6 times now. Never came in under 2 hrs. Too much luck involved on building engines. I prefer race for the galaxy over this.

Honestly for us it isn't much different time wise from terraforming mars with prelude.

I've found it to be faster once you are familiar with it, particularly with a higher player count as you take turns simultaneously. Really enjoy it so far and find it scratches the same itch as regular TM. But if you don't like regular TM i don't think this would convert anyone.

Thanks for sharing this OP. I purchased the game earlier this month for $33.99.

For anyone wondering what the difference is between the "collector's edition" over the "regular edition" (which sounds like it might be exclusive to Target), The Cardboard Herald made a video comparing them on YouTube here [youtube.com]. The primary differences are slightly different art/finish on the box, layered boards with recessions for housing pieces more securely, and trays for housing some components.

I buy most of my games at Target when there are sales, but I opted for the collector's edition for the layered boards.

This is one of the household's favorite weeknight games here. My wife and I can setup, play and tear down in a bit over an hour. We did opt for the deluxe edition because the dual layer player boards are a lot nicer, but they aren't mandatory. Either one is well worth the purchase if you like them.

You are trying to play this too much like the original! We had the same problem at first. Then someone figured out you can beat most people doing that by pouring resources into buying standard projects more aggressively. It's a bit harder in two player, but in more than 2 you can typically end the game fast enough to make half of the big cards a bad investment.

I played this a few times. Enjoyed it enough to buy it myself. I preferred it to the original.

Good luck! For what it's worth, the learning curve is steep but once you play one or two games and know the mechanics, strategies, and have seen most of the cards, things get a lot faster in the original game.
