1Tb of external SSD storage for $50 is a pretty good price. You cant play series X games directly from a USB drive, but probably worth it for storage of older games as well as media.

Anyone know if you can shuck to use internally? Have an X1S I'd like to replace the platter drive inside with, this would be a good option if you can use it outside of the casing.

This is nvme not sata based meaning it wouldn't work without an adapter. You could also just put all your games on the drive and play your games off of it that way.
