This is mirrorless camera vs DSLR D780. The DSLR will eventually die but again you might get a really good deal for an outstanding DSLR, if you want to get into photography but not the technology.

I do corporate photoshoots every now and then (have one next week for ~60 people) and have been eyeing full-frame (currently use Fujifilm APS-C). Was interested in this until I realized it doesn't support tethering in CaptureOne Pro. The lack of tethering for large photoshoots is a huge deal-breaker.

This is such a great deal. An underrated video camera and solid photo camera. Vlog is one of the best camera log formats and easiest to work with.

Autofocus isn't great and won't beat Sony or canon in video. Photo is decent, but I wouldn't plan on getting one if you shoot a lot of action sports. Battery life is solid and flip out screen is versatile. 2 sd card slots which I prefer over the more expensive options like cfexpress.
You say its solid photo camera yet lacks in Autofocus, behind Sony, Canon and photo is "decent" ? Be consistent bro!

Solid ~~ decent. I gave specifics to why. I'm not sure what your issue is when I described the context.

If you're not shooting action with lots of movement for focus tracking, I'd recommend this for the price. If you're a general photographer wanting a full-frame camera, this really is a good option. Not every camera is perfect for every use in this price range.

I don't think most professionals are seeking advice on slickdeals on the ins and outs of cameras. The purpose of my post was to quickly provide some pros and cons of it to a general consumer.

For video, I don't think there's anything comparable in this price range. I've shot on this camera since it was released for professional work in a variety of settings. If anyone has specific questions, feel free to ask.

Agree in this price range to have the ability to shoot prores raw on a full frame is solid. (sure you need an atomos but still)

Questions:

1. Would this be good for astrophotography?
2. Would this be good for YouTube videos (talking head) vs something like a Sony ZV-1?

I'm looking for a versatile camera to do both (so, something with a good selection of lenses). It would be my first "big kid" camera, upgrading from my relatively useful but limited phone camera.

Advice?

Exactly. 5.9k as well. If someone was only shooting photo, I probably wouldn't recommend this camera over other options. But for anyone looking at a photo/video combo, I feel like this can't be beat right now for $1500.

You can do prores raw with an atomos on the Nikon z6 too. But very few people, even professionally, would need or want to deal with those raw files when given the option of the 10 bit 4:2:2 this can already record internally. Even on an Atomos I tend to stick with DNxHR. The difference for anything other than a full-on film is just not there to justify the workflow difficulties. That's what really sets this apart for video. The z6 internal recording is far behind (8 bit 4:2:0 IIRC).

Some compelling video options on this, like being able to record full frame 4k30 (UHD OR DCI) at 10 bit 4:2:2. That's pretty unusual, but great if you want to use a stealth rig while still having a lot of room for extreme color grades. The video autofocus hunts a lot, but if you're shooting 10 bit 4:2:2, you're probably also manually pulling focus

Edit: If you want to use native lenses without making some pretty big investments, I'd recommend getting the kit with the 20-60mm lens for $1797. The selection of native lenses for this mount is pretty disappointing at the moment. I'm sure it will get better, but worth knowing what's available before buying in. I just recently switched to Nikon Z due to the some of the impressive and surprising lens options they have (the 28-75mm f/2.8 and the 40mm f/2 in particular). With L mount it looks like you need to spend a lot to get any wide aperture options, with the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 being one of the few options, but that's no bargain at $1000 plus.
There is also Sigma 28-70 F2.8 L mount

Depends on how much you're wanting to spend on lenses and how many.

Astrophotograohy, this camera would work great. Much better than a zv-1. This will perform better in low light as it has dual native iso. So iso at 4000 is really clean. Also, IBIS (internal stabilization on the camera sensor) is so good on these cameras. Better than canon and Sony right now. Great for shooting handheld.

For vlogging, I don't do any of that so it comes down to how well it keeps focus and your environment. For a studio, I'm sure it's great. This guy just switched to this from Sony and may have a good video shortly going into more detail. https://youtu.be/Kq9xLEfOX7g

Low light/high iso should perform well but make sure you can fit your desired lens to L mount.

If you want autofocus for talking head videos with small DoF, where people might move around, or holding stuff up to the lens, etc., look elsewhere. If you're locking down the shot and not moving, or have someone to pull focus, it has great video settings and quality.

Based on the comments in here on the AF, it sounds like this camera may not be the best for shooting POV porn (but probably better than my iPhone or $250 Vixia camcorder). Is there something better for that in this price range? Asking for a wife.

It's a serious question because I figure enough talented and knowledgeable people are shooting amateur porn these days that somebody could weigh in. I'm getting annoyed with the ridiculous wide angle distortion of my iPhone and want a real upgrade.

Or for $200 more, you can have the best of the best according to Consumer Reports (don't get me wrong, this Panasonic is a solid choice, just might not be the best)
