amex offers are random; there is no "targeting."
Quote from kensteele :
at this point, the amex offers are either available to everyone...or they are effectively "random."
It's literally in their verbiage: "Amex Offers are dynamic and personalized, so the offers you see may change."

Quote from Bunduckie :
I used it for another offer in April and still hasn't seen the credit. I called them twice and they verified it was a valid purchased and kept telling me wait 5 more business days, I think it's all lies and just trying to get me off the phone. amex has really dropped in service, if I don't get the credit then I won't be using this card ever again
Quote from mtnagel :
In over 8 years of doing Amex offers, I always gotten a credit like I should. With that said, I'm still waiting for a Hulu credit for a month and a half now which they have also verified that I should get it. Their terms give them months before they really have to give it to you, so I'll just keep monitoring it and contact them as many times as needed to get the credit.
I had a supermarket AO last year (10 off 200 for 3 months) and the second month, one of the supermarket charges somehow got misclassified vis a vis the offer. That is to say, AmEx recognized the purchase as having being made at a supermarket because I got bonus MR points for it, but it didn't count towards the 200 for that month. I called and spoke with a (overseas) rep who promised a manual credit. When that didn't happen, I called again, got the same rep who said he'd apply it again. That didn't happen, called a third time (after the 90 days) and got a different rep who of course washed his hands off of it and opened a ticket. Then after a few days, a generic $10 credit showed up on my account.

TL;DR: Amex Offers/customer service ain't what it used to be.

i don't see anywhere that says the offers are targeted.

when they say personalized, it means the amex offer looks like this:

"spend $100 at shell.com, get $10 back" instead of this:

"spend $100 at a gasoline station and get $10 back."

of course, this is no longer the entire case since they now offer those types of deals but in the past, they did not and they looked down on those types of offers from discover, etc. that's rich.

the verbiage is old and means little. just like it says no gcs. the amex offer is in no way targeted (and i'm using the marketing term "targeted"). as i said, everybody gets it or else if only 100k offers are allowed (example), then only 100k offers will go out (and there would be some restrictions like no business cards, no one who is delinquent, etc) and those 100k offers are completely random. restrictions and such rules do not equal targets. no one here has shown or proven that amex offers are targeted in any way....only guesses.

eta: i agree the amex offer process is no longer what it used to be. i wrote a lengthy piece on this earlier. i don't drink alcohol, so why am i getting so many amex offers on wine? jet blue doesn't fly in my region, why.....? what good is a bjs membership when all you have to do is read my zip code? because the one or two people left running the amex offer program wouldn't know "targeting" if it...

Amex claims Shoprite is not considered supermarkets. Be warned if you are in the area.

How far back are you talking about? AmEx has had generic/category offers going as far back as at least 2016 (telecom, hotel, airlines, home improvement, gas stations, office supply stores, etc.) while also offering specific offers for individual retailers within these categories. Going as far back as at least 2018--if not earlier--we've even been able to double dip (e.g. a concurrent offer for office supply stores and Staples.)

This information may (or may not) be dated, but I think it's relevant to the discussion about targeting.

Have you used your AmEx at Shoprite before? If so, see how AmEx classified the purchase. If it was Merchandise and Supplies-Groceries, they are FOS. You'll have a stronger argument if you have a card like the BCE/BCP or Everyday where supermarket purchases get extra perks (CB/MR.)

That is news to me.
Dec. 2, 2021, I made $15.11 purchase at my local Shop Rite.
American Express website says 3% Cash Back for that transaction.
Classified as U.S. Supermarkets.

Ridiculous. I always get 6% back on my BCP. You/they must be confused.

yeah i guess we are talking about way back. amex has had category but i believe the statement was meant to show that they are being a lot more specific by tailoring the offers which is why they can give you $50 off $150 or $75 off $200 which they could never do if they stuck to categories. can you imagine a category offer that said:

spend $100 get $35 back when you shop at any grocery store. the only way they can do this is offer for kroger. for the category, it would be something like $100 get $5...up to 3 times. amex says we can personalize this to kroger and get your a better deal. but too ba there is no kroger where i live why do i get this offer? because this deal is not targeted in the traditional marketing sense.

i appreciate the link to the post and perhaps amex did a better job years ago and perhaps it was their intent. the author of that post sounds like he is quoting for the mba books that i used to read so no surprise there. too bad amex has a ton of data but the amex offer team member is NOT using it. else there's no way they would send gas offers to telsa owners, diaper offers to empty nesters, wine offers to dui offenders, professional team sports offers to amex expats, beach equipment discount to alaskans, solo stove offers to az residents in the summer, and dell offers to everybody because nobody likes dell anymore. how can you not see these offers are completely random regardless what they claim?

i remember how you use to be able to add offers thru twitter, etc if they didn't show up. not anymore. i remember how you could add the same offer to multiple cards. not anymore (understandable). i remember when an offer popped up, first come first serve....add it in the first day or two else it went away. not anymore. i remember the excellent amex offers from the heavy-hitters (amazon, best buy, walmart, etc) and you would get these offers "no matter" how frequent you shopped there. no more. the totality of all these is what leads me to believe they have abandoned all sensible marketing objectives. together with the gutted small business saturday offering.

these offers do NOT entice me to use The Card. in fact, i'm not going to use amex unless i get an offer. there's no glory or respect or prestige left in using any amex branded card. sorry, this post is just as much a message to amex as it is to the forum; nothing that hasn't already been said by others in the past.

I use amex regularly at shoprite and it is always labeled as groceries, even the purchase recently made that should have invoked $5 offer. The CSR made the 'Not supermarket' when I asked why.

Lots of places that are not supermarkets use shopping carts, so I don't understand your logic. But of course they are a supermarket.

in the logo? that should have tipped off amex that this might be a supermarket.

but i guess it's 2022 so nothing means anything anymore. you could be a car dealership like cars r us and instead of a car you could put a shopping cart in your logo. i guess that's from the new mba. lol

So this weekend I shopped both Hmart and 99 Ranch and both are listed as Merchandise and Supplies-Groceries just like the other person above said they have for ShopRite. No notification I used the deal like usual so not sure if it's considered a US Supermarket. Anyone use this deal on any other markets that successfully triggered an "used this deal" email? Is it listed as anything other than Merchandise and Supplies-Groceries?

Kroger got tagged as "GROCERY STORES" and I got rewards for my Delta Amex that said, "U.S. Supermarkets". No email for either purchase I made there.
