With the big price drop, does this mean Nikon is clearing them out as they're gonna have the replacement very soon? This lens originally sold for $2,800 - assume their new version would be in/near that price range so if we want a deal, best purchase this lens now? TIA

But lenses and cameras are not like other forms of consumer technology: older doesn't mean worse and people tend to keep their cameras and lenses far longer than you would other forms of technology. Your wife may want that specific lens for a very specific reason -- either optical reasons (she likes the rendering, the form factor/weight, minimum focal distance, etc.) or because her camera is a bit older and it still uses F-mount lenses and not Z-mount lenses.
In short, newer doesn't always mean better. And with Interchangable Lens Cameras, newer may not be compatible with her existing gear. If she wants that specific lens, she probably has a very good reason!
