Not shady at all, it's stated in the agreement that if you cancel you forfeit all of the remaining trial days.

Just create a calendar reminder to cancel on the 11th month to prevent auto renew.

Not sure if it's the same for this offer, but last time tmobile offered this I signed up but they wouldn't let me cancel my auto renew and keep the year. The instant I canceled I could no longer use the service.

Why not advertised as Essential instead of +? It's good that it's free for a whole year, otherwise, paying $5/month and still see commercials is pretty pointless for me.
