It supports VRR after a recent firmware update; however, it disables local dimming which causes the image to look washed out. I wouldn't use it on Sony LCDs. It works fine on the OLED models because they don't rely on local dimming. They're also more expensive.

Yeah, I went on the AVS Bravia forums and read up on it right after I posted the above and saw the dimming issue when VRR is enabled. Looking for a 65" big screen to replace my aging Vizio 43" for around $1000 but the one thing that annoys me most in gaming and always has is screen tearing and especially input lag when vsync is enabled on a 60HZ display and I thought maybe this model would be a great pairing for my new nvidia RTX 3070 card but that local dimming issue is a real drag. Looks like I'll have to save my pennies and wait for an OLED model with VRR unless Sony does another firmware update that corrects the issue. Otherwise, $899 seems like a real slickdeal for this TV Wink

In for one. Price matched at Best Buy. Lowest I've seen this tv, probably because the X90K was announced and released. Not worth the extra for 2022 model in my opinion when this one is at a great sale price.

Good call! Yeah, you don't want to deal with those VRR issues. If you were content on playing 4K 60 without VRR then I'd go for it, but you'd want to take advantage of your RTX 3070. I know it's smaller, but the 55" LG C1 has been hovering around $1000-$1100. No other TV in that price range compares to it when it comes to gaming features and picture quality. HDMI 2.1 features work right out of the box, and you can take advantage of G-Sync.

If I'm not mistaken, I think I can still get 120Hz refresh rate at 4K with the HDMI 2.1 out of my 3070 to the Sony, which is actually enough to prevent (or at least greatly reduce) screen tearing and input lag since I'll be playing very few games over 120 FPS anyway (and with raytracing enabled, frequently a good deal less than that) but I always wanted a gsync/freesync display so I would like that feature (or something comparable) in a Smart TV. Ultimately I want screen tearing and input lag to be a distant bad memory hehe In the meantime, I just discovered a neat trick [blurbusters.com]that dramatically cuts down on input lag in gaming even with vsync enabled. Underrail was a game that was unplayable to me with vsync enabled because of severe screen tearing and horrible mouse input lag, but this trick removed almost all the input lag and screen teaering. Might be useful to fellow gaming nerds nod

That's cool. You can still utilize HDMI 2.1 on various LCDs, but it disables the local dimming resulting in a washed out picture. I don't recommend using it at all. There's a ton of videos about it on YouTube if you want to see how it looks. Gaming is not a priority for the Sony Home Theater Division. There's a rumor that Sony delayed the PS5 VRR update because their TVs weren't ready for it. News Flash, every PS5 is using a different display to game on. I hope this post will be useful to you and anyone else who's thinking about utilizing this TV or any HDMI 2.1 compatible Sony LCD for current gen gaming.

Well thanks for the tip. So even just HDMI 2.1 at 120 Hz refresh rate and no VRR causes the local dimming issue too on these models? That's a pretty substantial problem for those thinking of using a large screen smart TV as a gaming monitor, like myself. No one wants a dimmed brightness level. Looks like Sony is definitely not the way to go then if you'll be using this as a gaming monitor..

Just bought this at Costco for $999.97 with a 5 yr. Protection plan. Anyone have experience dealing with Amazon if this thing dies after 6 months? The service plan with Amazon would make it more than Costco....
