Beware, midea window a/c units dont have any filters to block bugs from coming in. They go right into the vent slats and crawl through the inside of the unit and exit where the A/C blows. Last summer i was killing about 10-20 stink bugs PER DAY, PER ROOM for every midea ac unit i have. Trust me find a better brand.

I bought a Midea U-shaped window unit at Costco last summer and love it. Quietest window unit I've ever had. I don't think I'd ever go back to a traditional one by choice.

I have both this (heating and cooling) and the u shape. The u shape has some high pitched noise which everywhere online says is normal. This one does not. I bought the u shaped 8k unit for that home Depot price in like Dec for like 279...the u shape does come with a nice (if not heavily oversized ) bracket. There is literally an additional 6-8" sticking out. The u shaped is less shielded from the elements it seems... If a regular ac is wearing a one piece, the 12k heat/cool is wearing a bikini. The u shaped is wearing a thong and stickies.
Some nice things: the u shaped is much more energy efficient as far as amount of insulation and exposure to elements. This unit has double layer of accordian walls. A nice touch. The app is ok, this unit requires you to use the remote to pair. The u shaped has a button.
I can't get either to show me humidity. In fact I'm not sure when it is supposed to cut out as the setting is only for temp.

I have the u-shaped but thinking about going with this because the U shape is incredibly difficult to get a good air sealed install all the way around. With this traditional design, you have the two fins on either side, and can easily use some good tape all around to air seal. With the U, they give you these foam blocks they are hard to cut to shape, and you also have a huge gap underneath the unit. The extra "quiet" is probably not worth it for the U shape, although I am hesitant based on a comment here about this units efficiency not being as great as the U

I'm researching as we speak, but am hoping someone who is more familiar with ACs can help me out.

I purchased the Frigidaire 15100 BTU a few weeks back from Amazon (price right now is $529; I bought it at $408).

Besides the Heating/Dehumidification features, how do they compare/contrast otherwise? TIA.

the frigidaire is not an inverter unit, so it will be louder, less efficient, use more electricity and just overall not perform as well as an inverter unit. But if you need RAW cooling power, then your 15k BTU unit will probably do better than this 12k unit

Not the most pleasing to the eye but I typically use a sheet of plywood with some foam around the entire board. I then wedge that between the window frame and AC unit. I painted the sheet of plywood white.

again I wish it heated near freezing like a mini split. as ghetto as it may seem if if did heat well i would put one in each bedroom and main living space instead of using my central unit. gonna wait until technology improves.

For the most part, the heating component is a gimmick. Maybe for the fall when you still have hot days, but overnight the house may drop to 60 so this can bring you up to room temp. But nobody will be using this all winter long as a primary heating source for a room

For those who have a u-shaped and say it's quieter than other units, is that because the noise-making parts (compressor? please excuse my ignorance) are outside and thus with the window shut you don't hear as much inside? Or is it just a quieter design in general? I'm looking for a new unit that won't keep the neighbors awake if I run it for a bit at night-time and my current Toshiba AC is just loud overall so I don't like using it unless it's daytime.

fellow gulf coaster here (Baton Rouge, LA). this has to be in a window because the back of it will be exhausting hot air and will also be running hot from the motor etc. Portable AC's work by ducting the exhaust out a window.
Searching the model number and going to product page, full specs show 1214W and 12 amps. So probably want at minimum a 2000W generator to power just this appliance (and like phone chargers/led lights probably fine). If trying to power fridge also, add that wattage onto 2000W imo

Has anyone heard of using this with central air? I have big south-facing windows in our kitchen/living room area, so during the summer, the lowest it ever gets is 75, and it's running nonstop to keep it there, even with keeping our shutters closed. I want it at 72 and am desperate at this point. I've had a HVAC tech look at our system and they've said it's working normally, so I don't know what else to do.

WOW. i have had 2 older crappy (but working) AC's for like 5 years. In this era of inflation with the cost of everything going through the roof i just got that LG 9.5K BTU AC for $289 that's being delivered tomorrow AND just ordered this 12K BTU for $296. AND they're both inverter units! i can't believe it.
