Is this game worth $40? I've gotten a few Mario second line games in switch, and think they're about $30-40 of value, but SMM seems like it has a lot of replay value.

If mods like Kaizo Mario or experimental levels appeal to you, you'll have a blast with this.

A good majority of what's released is unpolished or just insanely difficult.

But then you get things like people remaking Mario 2 and Super Mario World, so it's a mixed bag: https://youtu.be/aoPj61bZGEE

The multiplayer on custom levels is hit or miss though.

My kids (8 and 6 years old) love to make random levels for the other to try and play. I wish I hadn't just picked up another copy earlier this week at full price!

I love it, i love creating levels. Playing levels is meh, people make them next to impossible or get overly creatively difficult for a lack of a description, and it just suffocates any fun factor when you die the moment you start the level. It's weird how the population of people that create levels set the tone and went down this rabbit hole of making levels as difficult as possible. Me on the other hand make simple, oldschool mario style levels for everyone to enjoy. It's nice seeing people play your levels and get comments from the community.

I actually had made Super Mario Land 1-1 after I found out the Power Ball and level music is hidden in the game. Would have to dig it up since it's been ages but rebuilding or tweaking classic levels is what this is best at IMO.
