I just bought this from Costco for $50. It came with a Longer battery Life ( i believe 9 hour ) and a 40 Hour refill. I know its more- but 40 Hours is far better than the 12 Hour on this one.

Thermacell themselves replied to an Amazon question about this:

We recommend as best practice not to run Thermacell repellers directly next to uncovered food, or to move the repeller so that the food is outside the stated zone of protection.

So I guess you just turn it off, eat like a madman, and then turn it back on again in a situation where you're outside and eating? lol. I figure in a lot of cases, people would want some sort of mosquito repellant/deterring item so that they can enjoy dining outside. It's a shame there isn't something both safe and effective for this - I've heard citronella candles don't work all that well. I guess the best thing to do is just to continue spraying yourself down with the Repel Natural mosquito repellent and/or Skin-so-soft (I hate the smell of both but it's a necessary evil I suppose haha)

I've been using a Thermocell for years and I think it works better than anything besides bug spray with DEET, but I hate spraying myself with bug spray. I looked into getting the rechargeable one, but I started refilling the butane cartridges (youtube it) and it's cheaper to do that and buy the refill pads than it is to buy the refills needed for the rechargeable one. The worst thing is when one of us in the household (I won't say which of us) forgets to turn it off and drains the butane and kills a pad. I hate when that happens.

That I don't know (I was talking about the butane in the fuel cell in the other type). I did look for the chemical used in the pads at one point and couldn't find anywhere to buy it in bulk. I'd love to be able to reuse those if I could.
