Just get the better 8c/16t CPU. If you can't cool 105W, it'll run slower...probably the speed of the 5700X. But you can also manually set power usage targets and it can probably hit its benchmarks at 70W.

Perhaps but if your mobile only has a 4 pin CPU power connector is just better to not have to worry and fiddle. If you care about performance you won't be on am4.
I'm assuming it's not great for longevity to bounce a cpu off the rev limiter constantly although I could be wrong,
Btw I'm a fan of the minisforum 790/5 board+CPU combos the 7945hx is a step beyond anything in am4.

How do you set power usage targets to lower the power consumption? So that it runs at 65 tdp instead of 105 all the time.

With the 9600x just $50 more, don't buy this unless you are upgrading from an earlier AM4 platform.

I'm in the same boat with my 5600x and as far as I can tell, no. But it also may depend on other factors like GPU, my 3070 Ti gets maxed out by more graphics-intense games like Cyberpunk and Baldur's Gate, while the CPU usage sits around 50%-60%

Realistically there will be minimal gains. Unless you have another system to put your old CPU in I wouldn't upgrade for that.

Worth upgrading from a Ryzen 3 5300g? I have a 3060 and it runs games okay but not sure if it's even worth an incremental upgrade vs. saving for a whole new machine…..

The cooler that comes with it is really noisy though, so not really any better or worse of a deal. Unless you're impartial to the noise.

Thinking to replace my Ryzen 2700X. Its stock Wraith prism cooler is pretty quiet. I thought it'd be the same noise.

Yesterday I ordered the 5800xt. It was set to arrive on Sat. Was going to undervolt it to lower the watt and temp. As I've never done it before, I'm hesitant and worry about the process and risk to the system. Saw this deal and immediately canceled my order. Now the 5700x will arrive tomorrow! Don't care about the prism cooler as I rather use my current air cooler. It's cooler and less noisy. Thanks OP!

so wait would you be undervolting it with AMD software? Doesn't that have to be set up every time you restart your computer, or is there a motherboard way to do it permanently?
