This made me laugh.

"Can deliver ultra-fast 100 plus FPS performance in the world's most popular games, discrete graphics card required"
I have owned this processor for about a year and I have a 6700 AMD graphics card. I've had no issues with performance, everything moves fairly quickly on daily tasks. Very happy with it.

I want this original version, that extra cache is only really worth it if you are gaming, for most other tasks the higher frequency of this one may work out better.

Well nvm this, I thought it was a 5800x vs 5700x, did not look into 5700 all that much..

I'm targeting for around this price point-ish, but trying to decide if pulling the trigger on this now or waiting for a better Black Friday deal. I'm replacing a very aging i5-6600K, so pretty much anything from today's generation is a huge improvement (PCMark seems to be 4x on this 5700X vs the 6600K). Will there be even better processors in this price range at Black Friday? No Microcenter near me so it would be shipping retailers for me.

You could go Intel or amd either way. I would say plan either a 12600kf or 5700/5800x system. Then look at z690 DDR4 motherboards for Intel or B550 motherboards for amd.

Be aware that on Amazon there's some reasonably priced motherboards available 100-150 but they are Amazon renewed which is refurbished. There's pros and cons going that route. 90 day money back guarantee at least but I don't think you get any warranty support from the motherboard manufacturer.

Right now the 12600kf is 195 on Amazon and z690 motherboards are 175 or more for new. Renewed ones are 120-150.

These amd deals have been popping up several times the last 6 months on either the 5700x or 5800x but the b550 motherboards there's way more choice of them than z690 ddr4 boards and they tend to be cheaper too.

Also is RGB important to you? Be sure to find a motherboard that supports aRGB and RGB. Depending on the case your installing it into and the RGB if you choose to use, uses different kinds, it's good to have both options.

Some boards come with WiFi and others don't, if that's important to you, keep in mind boards that come with those.

You will probably need to make a list of motherboards that have the features you want.

Do you want ATX or micro ATX? Micro atx may be nice for smaller mid tower cases but you lose out on some pci express slots and m.2 nvme slots as well.

Lots of planning goes into figuring out a computer actually but hopefully that helps.

Also some motherboards are so basic they don't include usb type c or any of the super fast usb ports so that's something else to consider to if it's important to you.

Thanks for that Intel part. I've been out of the advancements for a few years. Can you outline what benefits about the new Intel platform I would see/use over the AMD AM4 platform with this processor? I think the Intel mobos are a bit more expensive, so CPU+Mobo would end up a wash.

I really appreciate this thorough response! Thank you so much!

So, the way I see it, I'm looking at either a 12600kf/z690 combo or 5700/5800X/B550 combo. That's good direction. There are deals on the 12600kf for $155 right now. Against this 5700X at $170 and Intel mobos being a bit more expensive, probably a wash (and the benchmarks seem pretty much a wash as well).

RGB doesn't matter at all to me, I don't need/want any RGB at all.

As far as mobo form factor, I actually am currently using a BitFenix Prodigy, so I need an m-ITX mobo. I only really need 2 DIMMs for RAM, 1 M.2, 1 SATA, and one PCIExpress for GPU (an old GTX 1660 Super). Very simple setup. Probably would make sure WiFi is in there as well.

Really what I'm wondering is whether Black Friday would bring cheaper prices on these CPU/Mobo combos over what's available here.

Thanks again!

Black Friday is such a mixed bag. There might be cpu motherboard combo deals and there might be specific cpu deals and motherboard seperate deals but is it the right model or reliable brand etc? Usually Black Friday they take the extra of certain models and discount them, remember they are discounted for a reason. There might be a great cpu sale but paired with a very mediocre motherboard that may not be what you want.

What I like to do is use the honey chrome extension, it gives you an option to see prices of where an item has been in the last 120 days. And you can see if that is a good price or not or it's just a matter of waiting a couple more weeks for something better.

As far as ITX form factor goes, your motherboard choices will be limited, so see what options there are for motherboards first on either Intel or amd and I think you will figure out what direction to go. Just be aware that Intel also makes ddr5 versions of motherboards and you may accidentally buy one and ddr5 is still really expensive compared to ddr4 right now
