I bought this exact set some time back. Best box cutter I have ever used. Not saying it is the best out there, but mine work very well and I feel they are safer and easier to use than some where the blades retract.
I have a Miluakee utility knife from Home Depot and it's hot garbage. The switch doesn't stay locked and the blade moves. My DeWalt is also crap, the blades are insecure and hard to change. The best one I've tried so far is a freaking Irwin, who would've thought

Maybe it's defective? I have 3 utility knives from them and none of them have this problem.

my buddy gave me one many years ago and I love that one. I bought this set last time it was on sale and it is definitely not the same. Seems to be lesser quality or something. Like the button is stiffer and knife doesn't flip out as smoothly. When I use the back end to cut the lock doesn't seem to hold in place.

That does not surprise me at all. Irwin makes high quality tools.

It snaps open and closed quickly and smoothly, the texture and ergonomics are great, the clip is sturdy for daily use and it's not too bulky.
