Very good 5 star Amazon rating [amazon.com] cat litter box for pellet-based litter (e.g. pine). The pad on the bottom can be easily replaced with any puppy pad.
It has an average price $63.71 on Amazon, making this a good time to buy if you're tired of heavy & messy clay-based litter.

50% off any pet care product at Target, price updates at checkout.

I have this and I'll never go back to regular litter boxes. Make sure you read the instructions because your cat won't automatically use it. They suggest you place this near their old box and stop cleaning the old box and so that's exactly what I did. It took about a month for my cat to fully transition to the new box. No more "digging for gold" or sand tracking everywhere.

Similar to printers and ink, the pads and pellets are how they get you. I've heard of using puppy pads like the post mentions and also using wood pellets for a super cheap alternative. I've personally stuck with their own products so I can't attest to alternatives but I imagine it'll work fine. They have scented pads and pellets now and I highly recommend them over unscented if you stick with their line of replacements.
I use these with dog pee pads and horse bedding pellets. Life changing and money saving. 40 lb bag of pellets is like $6 which lasts like 4 months, pads from Costco are cheap. I change the pads either twice a week for one box they pee in a lot, once a week for the second most used or once every two weeks for the other two. Four cats, four boxes, I spend maybe $100 / year. Much easier too.
This is a really great litter box, problem is the price of the consumables is up greater than 50% in the past two years. See the attachment- I've tracked it. This XL size takes 7lbs a month vs. the regular size take 3.5lbs.

The math isn't perfect, but you get the picture. Increase costs were enough to have me look for alternatives.

How expensive is the litter you have to use with this? We use top litter boxes and the tracking is non-existent.

I agree! I have had this system for about 4 years and I will never go back to traditional litter. My older kitty took to it immediately. The pellets do not track or dust, and do a decent job with the smell. I use the Breeze pads as they have a gel in them that swells up as liquid is added. I have one cat and use one pad a week, picking out solids daily, and removing soaked pellets and topping up weekly. It's a little more expensive than litter, but it's totally worth it.

I paid $65 for this large box when it first came out a couple of years ago, so at $33.50 I just might get another one.

I've been wanting to try switching my cat to pine pellets. Clumping litter is bad for them in the long run and non-clumping litter is a mess. This is a solid deal and skips a ton of the DIY steps. Can't complain.

Also curious about the ongoing costs. Obviously it's not like comparing 2 different litter types since it's a whole new system…

7 lbs of pellets will run you about $15-20 and you replace them monthly. The pads are about the same for 10 and you replace them weekly, so about 2.5 months. So around $25 a month in replacement material if you're keeping up with it

I'd suggest try pellets first before spending money on this box. Pellets seem to hurt my cats paws so they no longer try to bury their poop.

Alright y'all convinced me, I'll try it. I'm sick of cat litter being tracked around my entire home. Fingers crossed!

I liked it but hated cleaning it, so I went back to traditional litter.

Same. I didn't have this exact one, but it was a similar system... pellets and pads to absorb the pee. Those pads got disgusting super quick... and with 3 cats I'd go broke changing those pads every day. I do hate the litter they track around, but for the most part a little sweeping isn't a huge deal.

I think if someone only has one cat and they don't pee their brains out (or someone who isn't sensitive to the ammonia smell, it makes me crazy!) it might be ok.
