Not familiar with hunter, but my rain bird had a wire for each zone and a couple of common wires, so if yours is setup like that (which it should), then it should not be a problem.

For me, switching over from a existing system was very quick and easy.

Don't see why not. I replaced my old rain bird with a 2nd gen Rachio years ago. Take pictures of how it's wired and write down which zones go with which sprinklers.

I know they made some advancements to the watering logic on the version 2 model. Given where that is today, is there a big advantage to upgrading from Gen2 to Gen3?

Weather IQ was the big feature that gen 3 offered. I got an offer from Rachio to use Weather IQ on my gen 2 months ago. I wouldn't upgrade gen 2 version.

do people actually have 8 or more zones for spinklers?

Other than that i dont think theres literally any difference between 8 and 12 zones?

Yes, my yard has 12 zones and I have the 16-zone Rachio. Awesome controller!
