You use the app on your phone, its really simple. I vastly prefer my Roku stuff over Fire sticks if that's what you are trying to decide between.

Both Roku and phone needs to be on the same network, which is not the case for most public wifis (hotel etc has wifi client isolation)

many phones no longer have a headphone jack, bluetooth is unusable with Roku app (audio lag behind video)

Sure they do, it's called a USB to 3.5mm adaptor or I believe it supports bluetooth as well though I don't currently have access to test this without waking either the wife or the toddler. As for the hotel issue, I guess that might be an issue for some but for the vast majority using it at home it shouldn't be an issue. You can always hotspot your phone, hotel wifi is often slow as shit anyway!

You can't hotspot with the phone. The Roku app stops you in your tracks and says you have to be connected to Wi-Fi when you tap on the remote in the app, I literally just tried it. When you're on hotspot you aren't connected to Wi-Fi, only the device that is using your hotspot is connected to the Wi-Fi network your phone creates. This makes these devices all worthless. Basically all of these devices are worthless unless you have a known Wi-Fi network that both devices can connect to.

Not as convenient, but using a Wi-Fi enabled second phone (even an inactive old one) would work.

Since Roku have decided that they will control what apps I can and can't use on the product I purchased and own, I will no longer be using them.
They have no business telling me I cant watch content of my choosing on my device.
I'll be switching to Fire or better yet Android TV.
This is too much for this device anyway, and the lack of headphones on the remote really kills the deal. The app lags when you use the sound on your phone.
Pointless fpd.
This post is hilarious! I love Roku!

You can use a small travel router that allows you to connect to a hotel wifi network with a single router and then have all of your personal devices connect to that router. It should allow you to have your own personal network.
