ThinkPad L15 Gen 2 AMD with Ryzen 5 PRO 5650U (Zen 3) for $464.83 when you apply coupon code SUPERMAYCLEAR.

Add a second year of warranty coverage for $39, which brings the price above $500 to qualify for the 5% THINKOUT coupon code (stacks with the other one), for $478.64, effective cost of the second year warranty is less than $14.

NotebookCheck review [notebookcheck.net]

This is the best price I've seen for an upgradable, enterprise-class laptop with a Ryzen 5000 series processor with Zen 3 (watch out for the 5500/5700 processors with older Zen 2, still good but slower single-core performance). There was another deal recently that quickly went out of stock on an L15 with the same specs, but 8-core Ryzen 7 instead of the 6-core Ryzen 5 here for $52 more. Most users will be more than fine with the 5650U, which is a very powerful processor.

Main pros: ThinkPad build quality (this is a true business-class ThinkPad, below T series but above E series), excellent keyboard/trackpoint, enough horsepower for almost anyone, expandability and serviceability, decent IPS screen for the price, excellent port selection including 2 USB-C that both support Power Delivery and display output.

Main downsides: thick bezels, pretty heavy, no fingerprint reader, no backlit keyboard

Specs:
Part Number 20X70073US (Note: there's another model with part number 20X7007YUS, with identical specs and pricing, but Windows 11 Pro instead of 10. Deal works the same on that model, and you can install either OS regardless of which model you get.)

Processor : AMD Ryzen™ 5 PRO 5650U Processor (2.30 GHz, up to 4.20 GHz Max Boost, 6 Cores, 12 Threads, 16 MB Cache)
Operating System : Windows 10 Pro 64
Graphics : Integrated AMD Radeon™ Graphics
Memory : 8 GB DDR4 3200MHz, 2 SODIMM slots
Storage : 256 GB PCIe SSD
Display : 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, anti-glare, non-touch, 250 nits
Ports :
Camera : 720p HD
Fingerprint Reader : None
Keyboard : US - English with Number Pad
WLAN : 802.11AX (2 x 2) & Bluetooth® 5.2 (Qualcomm)
Warranty : 1 Year Courier or Carry-in
Docking : Mechanical Docking Support
Networking : Integrated Ethernet
Weight : 4.39 lbs
Ports :
1x USB 3.2 Gen 1
1x USB 3.2 Gen 1 (Always On)
1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 (support data transfer, Power Delivery 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4)
1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (support data transfer, Power Delivery 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4)

1x HDMI 2.0

As of the time of posting, both models are available for immediate shipping (Lenovo offers free 2-day shipping if you have ShopRunner).

My recommendation would be to add a second 8GB SODIMM to get dual-channel operation, which will help esp. with graphics performance, and to replace the Qualcomm wifi/Bluetooth with Intel, e.g., AX200.

Nice post OP. I got in on the Ryzen 7 version of this deal but agree this Ryzen 5 system is pently fast. Mine shipped the day after I ordered it. It's coming from their warehouse in North Carolina. I suspect the same is probably true for this pre-built as well.

I wish you could configure the screen in these, but for the price, it's an excellent deal.

Those are expected features at say $700 (for a ThinkPad), not <$500. And going the custom route typically means a much longer time to delivery.

A certain well-known ca$h back site is rocking' (hint, hint) 12% on Lenovo, bringing the effective price to close to $400. Lenovo is also offering double rewards right now, so that's another $28 or so you can use after 30 days.

I know right. For a ThinkPad, missing backlit keyboard is unacceptable. It's an extra $10 which I'm sure people would gladly pay.

Is this any good for my 6th grader (mostly school and home)? Seems to be aimed at office/business.

Just looking for a laptop with decent specs (upgradable to 16gb) and under $500.

Thanks

Thinkpads are tough. If my kids needed a laptop this is what I would get them today.
