I have two GS-AX3000s and also tried two GT-AC2900s. Both models are great, however they both have flaws regarding AiMesh. The GT-AC2900 would not serve as an AiMesh router to any other Asus router (even though it is specifically advertised that it can), but it will serve as a node. It even failed to mesh with another identical AC2900. Check my review on Amazon for more details. Easiest way to find it is to search the review images. Mine is the only one that has multiple routers and computers in the same image (titled "Confirmed AiMesh incompatibility - x3!"). I just did a did a third update to my review, but it will take a few days for Amazon to approve the edit. It was brief and basically states that the GS-AX3000 will serve as an AiMesh router to another identical GS-AX3000, but failed to serve an AC1900P. So in other words, Asus' AiMesh label/claim (which is supposed to be absolute according to Asus) has holes. Asus separates only AiMesh router and AiMesh node capabilities. But if it claims either, then it is supposedly compatible with ALL AiMesh routers in that mode. Other than this one major caveat, both are great.

If you don't plan on using the AiMesh mode, then either will be a great choice. But IMO, this AX is definitely the better choice.

An important note, Walmart recently did a planogram reset for electronics. I picked up two of these GS-AX3000s at about $60 each. Highly YMMV, but this was a clearance item at several stores.

Thank you very much that was exactly what I was looking for! I don't plan to use AiMesh so 1 would be plenty. Definitely will check out Walmart. Was this a recent planogram change?

I bought mine roughly two weeks ago. Odds are they are long gone, but your store may have done the planogram later. YMMV.

Too bad only 1 USB port.

Does it limit how many files iit can see from multiple USB external drives? My TP-LInk AX600 has a stupid limit so I can't connect more than 2 drive to it and be seen! My 2012 Linksys WRT3200ACM can see ALL my 3 drives, a 4 bay NAS and even assign drive names, specify folders shared, etc..to EACH DRIVE! TP-LINK is POS routers...

Anyone tried Merlin firmware? It appears this GS-AX3000 use different firmware (RT-AX3000).

I'm not sure on this one either, but I do remember something about Merlin being different for this one. You may be correct.

I use the GS-AX3000 with a wired backhaul to the Asus RP-AC1900 mesh extender. Does what I need it to in delivering full speed mesh wifi.

That's not really AiMesh. AiMesh is a wireless connection. In my case it is needed to provide signal to a router in a concrete block building that's almost exactly 100 feet away from my house. Wired wasn't an option, that's why AiMesh was required.

I am using my ISP's modem/router as the main unit, then running a 100 foot Cat6 to my AX3000, then using AiMesh to serve the second AX3000 in the remote building.
