No VPN needed. Just make sure that you stay on the webpage for the other country for it to be free. Once you claim it it will be available in English and work without issues on a US Xbox.

I usually don't have issues with these, but these two are showing up normal price on the korean/Japanese pages.

I think the normal text and the yellow price adjustment it usually shows not being there threw me off. I clicked on "obtain" and it seems to have worked and not charged me.
