Use merit (imidacloprid) for prevention starting around...right now!
Observation-wise, if you have a lawn which, for every other reason, seems to be doing well, and then suddenly after some hot spells in the summer (the same hot spells which bring a ton of crab grass), random circles turn yellow for no reason, then its definitely grubs (sometimes fungus, but thats more of a brown double ring than a single yellow circle of death).
Apply merit or bioadvanced grub control (theyre both from Bayer) right before you expect rain, and you should be good for the rest of the season. I havent tried grub-ex because its not available for sale in my area.
They arent cheap by any means ($20 for a 10lb bag that handles 5000 sq ft)

A good deal that is a bit hidden in 'Other' ... maybe add to Home and Home Improvement.
Same price ($6) at Walmart [walmart.com] and as mentioned, Lowes.
