Our friends who lives literally across the main street from us have AT&T Fiber, but the service is not available for us. What the hell? Did they just run their fiber up to across the street and say let's screw that whole neighborhood over there? It's literally only about 300ft away.

Used to pay $60 with equipment for 1G line that got increased to $70 a few months back. ATT has been raising price on that.

Im in the same boat as others. Live across the street from fiber, literally 60 steps to their front door. About 300 feet of fiber needed to run along the overhead poles to get to my house.

I get offered "Good news! You can get fast, reliable AT&T Internet. Our fastest speed plan available for your home is shown below." "Speeds up to 10Mbps $55/mo. for 12 mos., plus taxes". I chatted and opened a ticket. Chatted back a couple of week later. It was just closed. No contact.

I even have a fiber running from the pole to my house from 20 years ago from what I remember. Only AT&T can make cable seem so nice.
OMG. I checked back today, and I now qualify. There seems to be some activity in my neighborhood. $55 for 300Mbps with unlimited data. $350 total of 3 reward cards. $99 installation waived. I doubt that the $55 includes taxes.

Now I have to decide. I currently have Spectrum 200Mbps for $49.99 a month (including taxes). I have 3 months left on the "promotional" price. It is also installed and working. A couple of short outages recently, but I can't imagine that those aren't normal for both cable and fiber.

So if it is really $60 including taxes, The $350 covers almost 6 months. Right now, I think I will wait 3 months.

I really like the idea of switching back and forth every 12-24 months to take advantage of all of these offers. So nice to have some competition.

what's your upload speed on spectrum? A big advantage of fiber is symmetrical upload and download speeds.

It is not fast, 12Mbps. I don't upload much and only one user, no gaming. I could see how that would help video conferencing, online backups, etc.

Does anyone know if you have to use their AT&T Internet Gateway w/ Wifi and use my own Google Wifi mesh? I can look it up the details, basically just need to know if AT&T will give me a non-wifi gateway.

Looks like there is a passthrough option, with DMZplus setting. I can probably deal with that.

Did it say 'hard check'? Mine said it would not affect my credit score.

So, here's my fun story from last Saturday.

Last week, I received a AT&T promo via snail mail for a $150 gift if I ordered AT&T Fiber. I almost threw it out with the rest of the junk mail. There was a URL listed on the mail and I visited the URL to get a feel for what the offer was. Well, the URL took me to a $200 promo ($50 more than what came through snail mail) if I ordered online. Great. I was happy that I would get $50 more just for ordering online. $55 per month plus tax and some TX fees, no equipment fee, no data cap, no contract, no termination fee, no price increase at 12 months for 300 Mbps up / 300 Mbps down. Autopay and paperless billing is required. Compared to the Spectrum service I have now which is the same $55 per month and same terms but without the 'no price increase in 12 months' and 200 Mbps down / 10 Mbps up. Well, it looked like I could save some money over what I had and it came with $200 gift and no price increase in 12 months. Not bad. I called Spectrum to see if they can match/beat and they basically told me to go away.

So, I am in the process of placing the order on the website when Hannah from AT&T pops up via chat to see if I needed help placing the order. How kind of Hannah. Further, Hannah informs me that she can offer $250 in promo (another extra $50) if I let her place the order. Hmmm....someone will pay me an extra $50 for not typing on the keyboard?! As I am chatting with Hannah and confirming that there are no hidden traps and all same terms apply, the website gets worried I might not order and tempts me with an additional $100 promo (ACTNOW, I think was the code) if I completed the order placement. So, I am now at $300 in promotions, double of where I started with the postal mail offer, but now I have to place the order. I have to type now, oh mercy?

To this, Hannah says she can beat that and can offer $450 if she places the order. So, again for not typing my name. address, etc. AT&T will pay me an additional $100?! Wow! I asked Hannah to stop twisting my arm and go ahead and place the order. In the span of 20 minutes, I went from a $150 promo to a $450 promo. I am getting paid big bucks to do nothing! I am still shaking my head and incredulous about all of this.

Install was set for two days later with the tech scheduled to arrive between 2 - 4pm on Monday. Come Monday and past 4pm, no sign of the install person. I thought I was dreaming it all up but finally at 4:45pm, the tech calls and shares that he is on his way and will be there in 30-45 minutes. Long story short, install was completed around 7:30pm that evening. Fiber is now in hanging in the back alley and an AT&T subcontractor will be here next week to bury the fiber. Fingers crossed something does not go bad before the fiber is buried. I plan to cancel my Spectrum connection only after the fiber is buried. I work from home and internet is a must. BTW, AT&T Fiber speed test shows around 380 Mbps up and down. Works for me.

A couple of things to be aware of:
AT&T install requires a box installation at the point of entry into the house and another face plate type installation in the room where the modem is setup on the inside of the house. Mine is installed in the center of the 2400 sq ft house and signal quality in all rooms is solid. Both, the Wifi speed and Wired speed show 380Mpbs speeds. Nice! The modem/router/ONT box is bulky and I got the Nokia BGW-320 505 box. No user guide/manual is provided and I could not find one on the AT&T site. The device does not have the most user friendly UI, DNS is locked to AT&T and the overall functionality seems to be limited compared to other routers that I have used. I have not yet activated their included ActiveArmor functionality - want to understand what it is first and be sure it does not mine/monitor traffic for reasons beyond security. Since DNS is locked, I expect AT&T to have visibility into the activity, atleast the destination. I may have to put my own router with a different DNS (e.g. Cloudflare) behind the AT&T box....I do not want to spend time reading the fine print and legalese to see if AT&T mines my activity. They used to in the past, IIRC.

Equipment fees and using one's own equipment was asked about in the other mega AT&T-Fiber thread from last month. I wrote a response on the current state of that. I'm placing it here [edited] for those new to the fiber pushout right now:
Thanks, luckygecko, for the helpful info. Please share a link to the previous thread so that I can monitor if there are new workaround or any other place where I can learn about any BGW-320 work arounds.

Lot of reports on forums with people saying hard inquiries showed up with att name after they got service...I'd rather put a deposit down than have a hard inquiry. That's just my opinion

fwiw, i've been testing att's active armor and it blocked and notified me of a bunch of spammy websites when I had guests staying over. My samknows box says upload speed dropped from 365 Mbps to 80 Mbps and Download speeds were not impacted (~380 Mbps). I disabled it for now. Not sure what their T&C are

If you live in Kansas City, stick with Google Fiber. Much more stable and less latency than AT&T.
