Was tempted to buy when this dropped to $199 a couple of months ago but have been waiting, thinking it would drop more as the Platinum Gen 4 started to ship. Believe $180 may be close to the lowest price we may see as Gold Gen 3 inventory is cleared out. My LG Gram only supports Gen 3 so no need to buy Gen 4 except for future proofing. But, the real draw here is the power efficiency making this one of the best available options for laptops.

If you have the space/cooling then Gen 4 would be faster and better.
Why choose this one over the Samsung?
You have to buy Thunberbolt 3/4 enclosure to reach around 2000-3000MB/s(M1 Max/Pro TB support is better than M1 mini). In addition, there is NVME controller/heat issue. For ex, the incompatible NVME like 970 EVO Plus PRO may NOT get you the desired speed. I won't risk buying SK Hynix or AData controller as the controller may not be fully compatible and will be ended with a much slower speed or even disconnection. You can check the TB3 enclosure product page for compatible NVME SSD if available.
