I am typing this with an HP with this exact Ryzen 3 processor with the same 8GB RAM. The 3250U would never be mistaken for a high-end processor, but for most day-to-day tasks like browsing, using MS Office, watching streaming videos, etc., it does just fine so long as, just like the OP ASUS and my HP, it has a sufficient amount of RAM and a decent SSD.

I have 16 tabs open on my Chrome right now as I write this, and this Ryzen 3 CPU does not feel bogged down at all.

Where's all the love that the Gateway with 4gb of ram got?

This is a much more functional laptop with double the ram, double the storage, much faster storage, a backlit keyboard and double the warranty.

This laptop is nuclear compared to the Gateway for $50 more.
Too many idiots over there acting like a $199 laptop can't be criticized for some reason. "It's 200 bucks, what do you expect?!?" I mean, for 50 bucks more you can get something MORE than twice as good. That's what I expect!

Now the question is, is it better than the Walmart gateway refurb? Probably not.

CPU is a little weak, but other than that this is a great deal for a basic laptop, and the cpu will be fine for browsing. Backlit keyboard, fingerprint, anti-glare screen... why can't those be default on all laptops? Don't need one, but I wouldn't hesitate if I did.
If this is anything like my wife's cheap viviobook, then the ram should be easily upgradable. She also had an empty hard drive slot, but you need to actually buy the mount to put it in there.

Hers had one stick of soldered 4gb ram and a completely empty slot to add another stick.

That comes with a 2 year warranty, same as the gateway.

I don't think this deserve being $1000 original price.

I think I actually saw it goes around for $399 or something in OfficeMax or something few months ago pretty much every now and then

I love ubuntu (lubuntu), but this is false. Plan on at least 2 hours, particularly if it's your first time then more like 5 hours. I recommend it
It depends on laptop. I spent 2 hours trying to make Windows work on my Asus and I gave up. There was no way to turn off all of these Microsoft malware. Ubuntu started to work in 15 minutes. There was only one issue, snap was updating when on metered connection.

I agree... the bottom line is that 4gb withe no upgrade path is going to get you nowhere, regardless of the price.

Any links for the other you are talking about? I'm not being sarcastic. Legitimate curiosity
