Ok, but again I'll still be able to use the ax routers, just not as the main or base router connected to the modem.
Correct, though I'm not sure how AI mesh handles it. Wired backhaul will always be the best option.

We had a newer Linksys router crap out months ago and grabbed this one at Walmart for $200. It's been rock solid. If we didn't have any power outages with summer storms this router wouldn't have been rebooted. I've learned my lesson and will never buy another router brand

I bought one of these for 75 dollars at a walmart clearance area and it is phenomenal. I sadly have to play many of my competitive multiplayer games on wifi and ive noticed much smoother connections since getting this.

Is there a router that can make my 2.4ghz wifi go faster? I'm getting a pathetic 50Mbps on 1 gig service. 30 feet away, I'm getting 1.7Mbps.

I currently run an AC5300 with several other ASUS routers in Aimesh via wired backhaul. Looking to upgrade the base router to 802.11ax. Anyone know if there would be any drawback to moving to this model as my base router? (any lost features or capabilities?)
I upgraded to a TP-Link AX6000 and it's great, I got it used for $100. Just under their top gaming router. The ONLY NEGATIVE is that there's a limit on how many files it can read from external USB drives, which is STUPID! For me, I could only see 2 of my 7 storage drives thru USB ports of router! If you only need to used 2 drives, yo ushould be good. The range and strength of AX over AC is HUGE!, a game changer! Qith AX, I can reach the farthest upper room with plenty of strength. ie, with AC my tv upstairs would get 30-40 Mbps. Now with AX it would get 300+ Mbps. AX is a MUST UPGRADE, IMO...and the great thing is, it's now affordable!

Oh, you're totally correct. I have the RT version which has a dual-core 1.4GHZ and 512MB RAM, so looks like this newer model has no downsides that I can see.
Do you think it'll go lower?

Do you have to be on 2.4GHz? I'd recommend 5GHz, and most routers made in the past 5-ish years support that.

Any newer AX router will increase your 2.4ghz speeds BUT ONLY if the 2.4ghz client is newer. Passive boost to speeds is one of those things Wifi 6 AX brought with it. Some routers have been able to push close to 200Mbps on 2.4ghz at close range which in the past would be impossible to get over 120Mbps. At 30ft You will see an increase but it might only be 20-30Mbps more so 80ish Mbps, that's a complete guess cause everyone's environment is different and that plays a huge factor in speeds.

You guys are lucky, walmarts in chicagoland area do not carry Asus anything! The GS-AX5400 was a steal on that clearance.
