I think a lot of people are just uneducated about timepieces and the engineering that goes into them. It's taken for granted in the modern era but the inner workings of a nice watch are works of art.

This is why you're wrong: Craftsmanship is dead, mass production has won.
You can try to put an arbitrary value on something "expensive" based on legacy, but what good is it if the particular thing you buy was only really cared about for a couple minutes during the process?
You can try to justify that value with serialization and "limited releases", but come on... we all know the factory making these keeps right on going.
There's a reason whiskey barrels have had a 10% increase in volume over the past 60 years. And it's not because they magically got better at making the stuff.
It's alright to like nice things, but your barrier for entry is just you being a pompous jerk.
My smart watch tells me the time and my heart rate for when I'm working out, just because it have features, you don't have to use them grumpy old man.
