Now Sony is letting you upgrade your PS Plus "Essential" subscription to "Extra" or "Premium" tier for a $100/$150 flat fee (which otherwise would cost you $40/$60 extra a year) no matter how many years of "Essential" subscription you have left . EDIT: I went ahead and got this deal (yes the code is still working) and it indeed extend my premium. I am buying another.
Edit 2: See another poster's reply about extending. It only gives me half an extra year for this when redeemed.
