I just assembled mine and the front rotor is rubbing on the outer pad even when rotating freely and makes a rubbing noise, is this normal? Will it go away after some miles? The rotor looks fine.
you can adjust it with a allen wrench on the caliper.

Completely normal to need some adjustments. No worries.

[*]Brakes: Awful, just awful. I followed the break in procedure and even cleaned the rotors with brake cleaner prior to riding. I'll adjust and reassess. I might also soft wheel the rotors with a die grinder and file the pads slightly if I see any glossy areas. This is a cheap upgrade if needed. The motor's speed ability is more than the brakes can handle. That's always a nightmare on a motorcycle.
Great review, thanks!

Would these Shimano MT200 hydraulics [amazon.com] be a good choice for brake upgrades?

Also I was thinking of running this Kryptonite knock-off chain [amazon.com] for double-duty on my Groove and motorcycle. Do you think handling would improve with 10 lbs of chain wrapped to the front of the bike or would that just cause me problems?

Noob question. Is there a way to do a search on the comments so I don't ask something that has already been asked and answered? TIA

Brakes are utter crap going down hills
When I first setup the Stride for my wife, I noticed the weak brakes. They unfortunately were not tuned properly at the factory, or there is some cable stretch going on. Personally I will probably end up switching these for hydraulic disc brakes as that is my preference and I have 8 bikes in my fleet that have them. (No cable stretch with hydraulic).

***A big tip for the stock GEN3 mechanical disc brakes: There are adjustment screws on each brake lever, if you don't feel there is good stopping power, adjust the screw outwards which will tighten the break cable. Just be careful not to over-tighten as you don't want to squeeze them too quickly and go OTB (over the bars)!

After I did this I was able to stop my 210 lbs body pretty quickly, even on downhills. It is always a good idea to bed in new brakes on a bike. With disc breaks you can accomplish this on a safe downhill road where you bring the bike up to a good speed and practice breaking hard. This will help break in the rotors and pads on disc breaks and improve stopping power.

Yes, Shimano makes the best hydraulic breaks in my personal opinion. They run on mineral oil and are easy enough to bleed if you ever need maintenance. Most likely they will be hassle free unless you store your bikes upside down.

This looks like a worthwhile upgrade. Thoughts?

Not sure hydraulic is supposed to be the best. It was hard for me to slow down going down steep hills at 20 to 35 mph

My brakes are broken in and adjusted . Steep hills going over 20mph you always should pump both brakes. Took me awhile to stop going 35mph down hill

You don't have hydraulic brakes; you have mechanical ones

Yeah, the GEN3 disc breaks are all generic mechanical disc breaks. Not bad if properly adjusted, but once you have tried some top teir hydraulic disc brakes, you will notice an amazing difference.

Top teir Shimano hydraulic discs: https://a.co/d/eZJtpxM

But it would be over $700 for the best Shimano disc breaks set, as you need a front and rear. In a $900 entry level E-Bike these are decent mechanical disc breaks. They have more stopping power than rim breaks when properly adjusted.

Yeah there are a lot of physics at play, rider weight plus bike weight plus grade of hill plus speed. If you want instant stopping power, you owe it to yourself to upgrade your brakes to hydraulic discs.

I will spend $4500 on a mountain bike and still drop $400-$500 to upgrade the breaks. But I also do alot of downhill chair-lift mountain biking. You need the top tier or you just might crash and get hurt. I've done the crashing part too often and decided spending money on safety gear is a smart idea. You never can spend enough on safety gear IMHO.
