20% off or not. This doesn't seem like a great price…. ?

Check CL and MP. They don't seem to hold their value very well. I paid $50 for my roof box. Not this nice but about this size. I've probably got about 10,000 miles of use out of it.

Prices have gone up on these boxes quite a bit over the last year. So yeah, 20% off isn't what it used to be, but it's not like the price is ever going back to what it was. It's a solid deal.

Maybe it differs by the area. Used Yakima and Thule boxes in So Cal aren't discounted much on CL or OfferUp. I tried to find one for months but they would regularly sell for $400+ depending on the size. I ended up buying a Yakima Skybox 16 not long ago using the 20% off coupon. Wasn't worth buying used for such little savings.

Not in tune enough with prices on these to comment on this deal, but I would be hesitant to buy a second hand or non brand name roof box.

A younger, dumber, husband and me kept our brand new Yakima roof box on our vehicle, and that vehicle was unfortunately parked uncovered in the elements as we did not have access to a high enough garage.

After only a few years, the lid (and all contents) blew off while full speed on the interstate. Terrifying! We are so lucky we were in a remote area and nobody was hurt, and we were able to scramble around and retrieve everything safely ourselves.

Same exact thing happened to friends of ours with their old Yakima roof box.

It could be something to do with Yakima itself, or their older models.. or something else I don't understand. Definitely open to having my mind changed.

But based on those experiences, I would never buy a non brand name roof box (if a Yakima went down like this, I'm skeptical of a lesser brand..); I now have a healthy skepticism of my Thule box that replaced the previous.

And, I would want to be the original owner because I wouldn't trust people to have used and maintained it properly. I hate thinking about if we'd unknowingly sold our old box to someone, and that had happened to them in a busier area.

Worth a few hundred dollars more to me for the peace of mind.

Also, some people let you rent their boxes. Check CL and FB for rental deals. No need to store it when not in use.

That's correct. Crossbars are a must for the box installation.

Not sure about Yakima, but I have a Thule box that I purchased sometime 2005 and 2008. I've used it on countless trips (outlasted 4 different SUVs) since then on winter trips below freezing and summer trips across the desert. Just used it last month to move my daughter out of her college apartment. Filled it completely and drove back at 75-80 mph and no issues.

Maybe I unknowingly bought some extra deluxe model that is super durable, but I store it outside and it doesn't seem any less sturdy than it was new. Fiberglass shell is stiff but not brittle, without any signs of cracking and the locking mechanism feel smooth and secure. Ymmv.
