A younger, dumber, husband and me kept our brand new Yakima roof box on our vehicle, and that vehicle was unfortunately parked uncovered in the elements as we did not have access to a high enough garage.
After only a few years, the lid (and all contents) blew off while full speed on the interstate. Terrifying! We are so lucky we were in a remote area and nobody was hurt, and we were able to scramble around and retrieve everything safely ourselves.
Same exact thing happened to friends of ours with their old Yakima roof box.
It could be something to do with Yakima itself, or their older models.. or something else I don't understand. Definitely open to having my mind changed.
But based on those experiences, I would never buy a non brand name roof box (if a Yakima went down like this, I'm skeptical of a lesser brand..); I now have a healthy skepticism of my Thule box that replaced the previous.
And, I would want to be the original owner because I wouldn't trust people to have used and maintained it properly. I hate thinking about if we'd unknowingly sold our old box to someone, and that had happened to them in a busier area.
Worth a few hundred dollars more to me for the peace of mind.

Maybe I unknowingly bought some extra deluxe model that is super durable, but I store it outside and it doesn't seem any less sturdy than it was new. Fiberglass shell is stiff but not brittle, without any signs of cracking and the locking mechanism feel smooth and secure. Ymmv.
