The AMD version of this (whenever it is released) would be awesome. No need for the battery draining discrete GPU with AMD's RDNA2 graphics, plus faster DDR4 memory would be amazing. The 6850u is also more efficient, so the 57Wh battery will last longer. Looks like they have a T14s Gen 3 AMD, but no P14s Gen 3 AMD yet.

This was a good teaser for me. Need a 14" laptop for my daughter going to college but under $1000 would be less painful. 16gb Ram and 512 SSD. Feel free to recommend something. Thanks guys for all of your posts.

Why does a college student need something with those specs? It's overkill. 256gb and 8GB is more then enough. Web surfing and simple note taking. Unless you're telling me she's doing video and photo processing. Even a CS student won't need something with 16GB.
Engineering classes can require some heavy software like AutoCAD and Matlab.

If you're truly running autocad you need a dedicated GPU. Reccomended requirements are 4gb gpu. You don't need more then 8gb of ram for matlab.

Both softwares are generally in computer labs especially autocad as its hardware intensive. There's also the fact autocad costs like 2k annually which makes it seem unlikely OP will be looking for a computer that can run autocad.

has anyone confirmed if this has the Trackpoint issue plaguing modern ThinkPads?

a small sample of impacted models where the red dot mouse AKA trackpoint stops working:

ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 / 1, P15s Gen 2, T14 Gen 2, T15 Gen 2, P15v Gen 3, T15p Gen 3
P1 Gen 2, X1 Extreme Gen 2 / Gen 3, P15, P17, E series, L series, X13 Yoga series

Pretty much every popular Lenovo ThinkPad model is impacted. This issue persisted >1.5 yrs before Lenovo released a partial fix, which has not fully resolved the issue.

see thread:
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Thin...438?page=1

Be weary of buying any new Thinkpads as Lenovo's QA has gone to crap... I say this as a ThinkPad user for over a decade with several models, looking for a replacement

it won't.
i have bought enough thinkpad over the years (including one last year with 3070 chip when the chip shortage was the worst), i always get them in about 2 or 3 weeks despite the estimate always says 2 to 3 month.

Many of the 8GB laptops are soldered. 16 adds longevity.
