Helpful tip- If you are new to Tracfone be sure to sign up for the Tracfone rewards! You find a valid referral code to sign up for a nice bonus . If you use a top tier code you will maximize the bonus and get 8,000 rewards points ($80 value) in your account. This can be used to buy air time, get phone discounts or add extra data for $10/GB, or minutes, etc.
Activate the phone first, then sign up for rewards with a valid promo code.

Use a top tier one that will get you 8,000 rewards points ($80 value) when you sign up. Most only will get you 5,000 ($50 value)

All I care is my son can call me when he needs and vice versa. What I don't want is my son would use it for playing video games, chat with friends unnecessarily or watch YouTube. What do you propose?

If you are planning on keeping the phone, note the reviews on Walmart.

What do people here plan to do with this? I can only think of keeping it as a backup in case my normal phone dies, but it sounds like it's not unlockable for 60d anyway.
Older people like them. My 92 year old father finds them much easier to use than a smartphone.

Ordered one just to have a backup phone. For $30 with a year's worth of minutes I'm not expecting anything top of the line.

Don't forget 7,000 points ($70) reward points if it is added to an existing Tracfone line/account per Tracfone Rewards rules stated online. This became the second line under the same account. The reward points belong to the account. Can be used for either line to add data/min/txt or extend service. I found this very attractive.

The sim stays with the phone.
Tracfone SIM is married to the phone. It cannot be moved to a different phone. For a different phone that does not have a Tracfone SIM, you need a new SIM, very cheap online.

Where did you get that idea? You can certainly transfer the sim from the new phone and transfer it to another tracfone

7th grade, get him a smart phone, use parent controls to limit consumption. He will be mocked with a flip phone. Middle school is brutal. This is better for the 80 yr old parent or the emergency bug out bag.

The specs say this phone's operating system is KaiOS - is that true? Is it slow? Does it come with Facebook, Youtube, etc?

We have an LG Classic Flip which allegedly uses Android AOSP 8.1. It's nice, trim, pretty responsive, and no bloatware.

I heard rumor KaiOS was bloated and slow when it came out, trying to be a quasi-smart OS for feature phones.

The problem is not the KaiOS, it's the fact this is a flip phone with no touch screen and only numeric keys. Case in point, let's say you want to send a message saying 'Hi', first you press the number 4 because that number is associated with letters g, h, and i. Then you have the choice to use the directional pad to spell out H, or you can press 4 again to give you a choice of words, 'Hi, It, In, Is, ...etc" and you use the directional pad to select the word. Now imagine you want to text longer more complicated sentences.

The phone does come with web browser and youtube, but then again, you have to use the directional pad to move the mouse, and use the numerical keypad to enter any text into the web browser. Honestly, this feels like you time travelled back more than a decade.

My recommendation, just follow the harvesting directions in the wiki, it works, I just did it on my phone. Thanks to OP for the clear directions.

HSN warning: if you check out as guest without creating an account, it will appear to apply the discount, and then remove it immediately after purchase. Just did that to me and I had to cancel the order. When you read the fine print of the coupon code, it states it is for HSN account holders only. Just FYI.

Edit: HSN kudos: their customer service chat was quick and responsive and applied the discount for me. Thanks!

greensale addressed how this phone with kaios works.
If you're going to get any phone with kaios, might as well get a smart phone and be done with it.
Personally, I have no problem sending texts numerically and prefer it most times. But, I would not need an internet connection on my flip either. Strictly voice.
Once you add internet capability, I believe you negate the purpose / reason for having a feature phone.

Things have changed. I got error when you asked, but in next few days, I was able to order it to MD. Received the phone and activated too.
