Depends on his age and how good he is following instructions. This stuff is toxic. You need to wear gloves (and ideally goggles) when dealing with resin. You need to deal with UV light, which can blind you.

I'd start with a regular FDM printer and print PLA / ABS, which are a lot less toxic.

For miniatures, jewelry and other small but detailed parts resin printers are better suited. But the post processing and handling the resin could be a problem. FDM (filament) printers are cheaper for prints of the same volume and usually have a bigger print volume.

I went from a elegoo mars to this. I was trying to get a cheap replacement because my resin vat leaked and broke my whole machine.

This thing is tiny but will print some minis. It works fairly well but the mars felt better. I'd say if you're casually interested and wanna give it a try this is good for that. If you love it you'll almost immediately want to upgrade though.

Edit: oh I'm stupid! This is bigger than I thought originally. Go for it!

Depending on the age of the child. It requires gloves, masks, eye protection, ventilation, rubbing alcohol and uv lights and adequate workspace.
But I could see a tech minded, carefully supervised pre-teen operating this carefully.
If you got this for a loved one, I would drop in the extra for the Wash and Cure machines. They are worth the money for convenience of post processing.

I would recommend getting a filament printer first to learn how to use it. The Ender 3 Pro is always going on sale and teaches you the basics and gives you a great understanding on how these work.

Super fast Google showed some but I'm sure it's replaceable. Just because of how they're built, I can't see one that isn't replaceable.

Also I was mistaken, this isn't as small as the one I have. I would definitely suggest this.

Never, and if they manage mortals won't be able to afford them.

I do a lot of SLA 3d printing for work using these now almost disposable printers (I use epax and phozen printers). If you use water washable resin and a flexible magnetic build plate add on, it makes the whole process so much cleaner. We were using standard resin before and the stuff gets everywhere making your whole workspace sticky from resin residue. The magnetic flexible build plate also helps since you don't have to remove the entire build plate from the printer (usually dripping resin all over the place). Anyway, this seems like a good deal. The build plate is pretty big for this price point (about 5" x 5")

For a newbie, is the "wash and cure" option a necessary item?

No, it's a convenience item if you have excess workspace.

edit: not sure why down votes - they asked if it's necessary and it's not...?
