Hahaha - this has bugged me for ages. I assume it's a legacy thing from the stone ages when many early products that enabled video capture were "cards" (circuit boards) that plugged into PC motherboards, similar to GPU cards today?

External video capture devices with cases, some not requiring a PC at all, have been around for years. While most manufacturers recognize that these are not cards per se (you won't be plugging them into a PCI slot) and call them "devices", many users apparently can't stop calling anything that captures video a "card" and EVGA appears to have given in to this.

Anyway that's my story.
Yeah that's what i'm guessing too. Back in the days USB wasn't fast enough for video (unless you go low resolution) so the good ones were all PCI card. And the term "capture card" just carried on.

MSRP suggests this is normally $220 [evga.com] so I would say this is a good deal.

I just usually am recording 30 second clips of my gameplay occasionally that I generally save to my hard drive, and just use Xbox Game Bar or OBS. What benefit would this add? I don't generally stream, and if I do, I just do on discord with friends.

This is for capturing external video feed (gaming consoles being the main use) and bringing them into your PC so you can stream/record to edit and post online. Not sure you'd have a use for it if you're playing on PC

I mean it's still technically correct. It's basically an external video/audio card inside a plastic enclosure.

I don't follow this stuff that much, so dunno.. but I'd guess maybe there is still a lot of actual PCIe cards being used by streamers? With USB 3.1 you are bandwidth limited and can't capture 4k@60 for example -- for that you would need the bandwidth that a PCIe slot or Thunderbolt provides. Many streamers stream from a desktop PC, so it would make more sense to get a PCIe card in that case, so maybe the term "capture card" still holds on because its still pretty standard to use a PCIe card. Still is weird to call USB devices cards, though lol. If I were streaming console I would most likely get a PCIe card to put in my PC, so would be confusing to keep finding USB devices when I'm searching for a PCIe card.
