When I was a student, I used an 8gb laptop for a few years, on which I did the following:
* Preparing PowerPoint presentations with dozens of slides
* Image processing and data analysis on datasets that are tens to hundreds of megabytes
* Light Photoshop work
* Writing my thesis
* Creating a website full-stack
... and more. I also constantly have more than a dozen of browser tabs open. I have almost never seen an "out of memory" error or run into significant slowdown. If anything, the 5th gen Intel core i5 processor was the bottleneck. It did struggle to run a Windows 7 virtual machine, or read in a csv that is 1GB and process it, but I don't do this kind of work on a daily basis.
Not that I like 8gb -- I hate that as much as everyone here -- but saying 8gb is only good for web browsing or media consumption is just baseless and ridiculous.
I do not mean to challenge this, but would it be possible to know where did you find this? I am interested in this device given the price and specs (considering the RAM is upgradable). I looked for information in Lenovo's website and chatted with a Microsoft store representative. The representative told me it is possible to upgrade the RAM to 32GB. I am confused because the RAM seems to be DDR4 (not DDR4X, which is the soldered one) and that would mean it is replaceable, but I cannot find any information on the number of slots available (or if it is soldered).

Because this get posted here quite often. Google 82L500F5US upgrade options and you will a few articles.
Man another great deal with a beautiful screen but low ram. What a bummer. The price is right but only 8 gigs non-upgradable? Reminds me of the 500 dollar Asus OLED last week. Great for web surfing and media consumption but that's it.

I don't disagree but there are probably a lot of people like myself who would be interested in this as a budget gaming laptop. Even adding the cost of more RAM, it would still be one heck of a low budget gaming rig. More disappointment than anything.
The RAM police always comes out when an 8gig pops up on Slickdeals. These are modern machines that can handle quite a heavy load. If you know you'll be doing more than this $500 machine offers (and know that 8gig isn't for you), you shouldn't be looking at $500 pcs. For the price this machine is fantastic and for 85% of those looking at this as an option, it's perfect . The screen is gorgeous, large and with windows 10, it's sleek and runs great. I haven't had any slow downs whatsoever and I work from home. I got this during the $600 deal a while back on SD and I don't regret it one bit.
