The 27s and 28s have gotten horrible reviews for collapsing toe boxes, narrowness, running small, premature degradation, etc. I bought a few pairs but promptly returned them after measuring the outsole and finding it was several mm smaller than previous versions, making it feel less stable. The 29s are coming out next month so I'm hoping two terrible iterations is sufficient for Asics to realize it needs to get the Kayanos back to form. That said, these have been this price on Amazon/Zappos for a few months. With the 29s coming out next month, I'd expect these to drop even further if you're intent on buying them.
Hate to say it, but been wearing Kayano's since the 17s and have recently fallen out of love with them. Other manufacturers seem to have made significant strides (no pun intended) in their running lines, while ASICS have really stayed stagnant, for good and bad I suppose 🤷🏼 ♂️

You cannot wear these shoes with inserts. They already correct some of the foot position, and your foot will really hurt if you try to put your inserts into them.

what brand/model did you end up getting?
the kayano has been great for me up until i started reading reviews of the 27/28..
the last decent pair was the 26, i bought a few of those on sale but i'm down to 1 pair and looking for alternatives until the kayano 29's come out and are discounted

They're half right - Asics has had great running shoes recently (Novablast 2, Metaspeed Sky+) but those are not stability shoes like the Kayano. The more recent stability shoes are more of a guided stability, in that they do not have rods or posts on the medial side anymore. Rather, they use some sort of denser foam to prevent collapsing inside.
Some of the alternative stability shoes are the Saucony Endorphin Shift 2 (half off now), Guide 15, and Tempus, New Balance Vongo V5, and Hoka Arahi 5/6. Really depends on what you're looking for - actual running/racing or just an everyday walker with stability

Yes 1000x this, super disappointed with the 27's and 28's returned both they were so bad.
I've had these and yes the 26's were the last good pair. I owned 4 pair of those. The 27's had a collasping toe box that rubbed against your toes and they didn't fix that for the 28's. Skip these

On to Saucony at the moment and really enjoying them. Maybe just because it's something new... but I can't imagine I'll be back in Kayanos any time soon.

I came here to comment similarly...it seems as though after 21, the shoes are just not the same and I've also found better with other brands instead. Had been a big fan, but as much as I'd like to like them, they just can't compare to others (personally enjoying my hoka Rincon 3s by example)

My custom made inserts work fine, at least no issues for me.
