It's refillable so it lasts a really long time (practically forever if you take care of it properly), it is refillable so you have your choice of thousands (millions?) of colors and various ink properties, you can get it with multiple nibs and nib types (not just sizes, but you can swap out for flex, oblique, music, italic, and various other nib types (or craft your own easily enough), and the stock nibs typically have a significant smoother writing experience than even gel pens. (not that i'm a gel pen hater either, i just prefer FP's. Aesthetically you can get them in any color under the sun with a ton of different looks and features, and some FPs hold a CRAP TON of ink (I tend to gravitate toward piston filling mechanisms myself and many of those hold like 4-5x the ink that a gel pen has.) also I feel like FP's are better for longer writing sessions like note taking because you don't put any pressure on the pen at all, the nib glides on the paper with only very light pressure of gravity.
Some folks don't like FP's though because it takes a little bit of practice to hold them in the correct orientation for writing (nib down at ~30-45 degrees to the page), there can be a bit more maintenance (cleaning your pen between fills or when it dries out if you don't use it for a few weeks/months), the possibility of messier filling, the occasional ink glob on the page from "burping", etc.

A good price (better than Amazon) on the entry level Lamy Safari fountain pens. I bought a few to give as gifts for folks that have never used a fountain pen before. Heads up: there are a few sales and discounts happening on the website right now with different codes: bts50 and bts40. They will only let you use one code at checkout, no combinations, so there are only certain pens you can get on sale with either code. Also, to find the box for entering the code, go to the second page of the checkout where they ask for your shipping address and then click "order summery" and the promo code box should appear. Free shipping over $50.

Gel pens are fun too, but...

More control over the writing experience (have a pen for extra fine, medium, stub, etc.), can change out inks as desired without throwing out a whole pen, and it's just kinda fun. I have a couple dozen inks from Diamine since they are cheap to import from the UK, and I can swap pens and inks around depending on what I want. So many colors, so many properties (shading, shimmer, sheen, waterproofness, etc.).

It's a fun hobby, and definitely lands in the luxury hobby category, but even a cheap Platinum Preppy with a cartridge is a good experience.

Bought a fountain pen from last deal and was a little bummed it only came with one ink cartridge- and not a refillable converter. Its in the description so it was my mistake but still a bummer.

Fountain pen users, why do you prefer that over gel pens?

No love for the Tipo? :
https://www.mygiftstop.com/produc...ip-l339eme

If you keep your pen on a lanyard or in your shirt pocket, this design is great as you can't hang it up without retracting the tip. It also holds well enough that you can leave it on your lanyard when you take it off.
I wasn't impressed with the ink/tip, so it's important to note a G2 refill fits in there, as well as a jetstream refill(personal favorite).

A lot of pen deals lately. Are pens more popular, or is there a user who is particularly hyped about them?

If you're thinking of gifting a fountain pen to someone. Make sure they aren't left-handed. We can't use them.

Great prices.
Got the M+ and the Candy Lamy. I'm not a big fan of Extra Fine, just too thin on fountain pen for my taste and some brands the EF are super thin. Some like it though. FPs are awesome and write so nice. Glad to see people are still writing, I think journaling is on the rise. I also find when I note take by writing versus on the computer I retain it better.
