Have "soundbars" replaced surround sound systems or are those still a thing?
There are two camps on this. One side thinks that soundbars are the best thing since sliced bread. The audiophile community on the other hand thinks they are a cancer to home theatre and that a basic cheap 5.1 setup from an audiocentric brand will spank any high end soundbar.
The truth is in the middle. Soundbars are a viable option for those who want sound that is better than what is offered from their TVs. That is not a hard bar to meet and soundbars will serve this purpose. Moreover, they are suitable for those short on space.
TLDR: soundbars can be a viable option for you if you have certain requirements and eilitist audiophiles who shit on soundbars are ignorant.

Wow, that was some great info and very succinct. Thanks a bunch for that. I have a cheap sound bar and a super old Yamaha surround sound system but rarely see any posts here for SS sound so it got me thinking.
