It's more of a bait than an act of desperation on their part. I never got the 25 back last time I bought a similar offer, don't think it was Groupon though. Their customer service is pathetic, and I finally gave up after chasing it for a while.

I had the opposite happen. Bought a membership with the pay $45, get $45 off purchase offer and used $25 back AmEx offer. $45 came off of my first purchase and I made $25. I get a new membership every year with these deals but this latest one was the best (for me)

Okay, to be more specific. I bought a couple of trash cans online, and joined the plus membership as well in the same order. Two weeks later, luckily, all of sudden, I was like, I thought I bought something from Sam's club, so I checked, it still showed "on the way". But then I checked the tracking information, it stopped at label created. So that I contacted online chat, someone told me not to worry, they would do their best to take care of me, in 72 hours. Three days later, nothing happened. I called them up, they told me the trash cans were out of stock, they cancelled my order, but wouldn't cancel my plus membership. I had to talk to the supervisor to cancel my plus membership. Simply the worst customer service!

Sams must really be struggling with their membership numbers, the buy a membership for $45 get $45 off, buy a membership for $25, get $25 off and multiple other membership deals (though not as good) are really piling up and one after another

I just now noticed a Sam's Club buy a membership for $45, get $45 off deal is FP right now with +121 votes. Looks like this is the same deal, just the outlay is $20 less.

Yeah, that deal has been going for a while. Most people (that had the AmEx offer) did it last month and made $25

You can basically always get a SC membership for free (if you count the gift card) or a money maker with AMEX offers.

But the fact you don't get free shipping is bullshit. You have to buy the upper tier to get that.

I went for the $45 version; never got any email or any other mention of the $45 back (via purchase); so, called in to cancel and got a $45 e-gift card.

You can literally use someone else account with scan and go and never have to sign up. Only thing is they don't let you return without the actual member.

I used the $45 of $45 around a month ago. Went in to get my card a few days later and bought some gift cards and laundry detergent and got $45 off. About a week later I was at Sam's trying to get gas and it was not accepting my membership card so I went inside and the CS rep couldn't figure out what was going on and called a manager. The manager said that there was a glitch and it never charged my cc the original $45. I checked my card on the app and sure enough the temporary authorization dropped off and I was never charged. She said it wasn't the first time this had happened.
