Wrong, the 3 months to 50 days conversion only happens for EXISTING Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions. New and former subscribers can convert Xbox Live Gold into GPU at a 1:1 rate.

One simply needs to make sure to redeem all XBL Gold codes before signing up for GPU.

Also the OP doesn't say anything about the extra 1 month for recurring billing.
If I had a quarter for every time one of these threads got posted... 😆
My gamepass expired a couple of weeks ago and I just did this and can confirm that you are wrong. I have 3 years of Ultimate now for roughly $20 a year.

This is still a decent deal, but it's realistically more like 6.5 months for $20. The conversion is 3 Months Gold = 50 Days Ultimate. Even if you've expired, you may not get the extra month for $1 offer, and the free month for turning on recurring billing offer has only worked for me with actual Ultimate codes; I've never gotten the offer while converting Gold codes.

So, if you're an existing or former Ultimate member, this will likely wind up being ~$20 for 200 Days of Ultimate. Even if you get the extra month for $1 as a new or eligible expired member, that's still only ~7.5 months total, which still isn't bad, just not spectacular.

hot damn thats amazing. Mines dont expire for almost a year. i thought I was getting a deal at 40-45 a year. but 21. im super jelly. I wouldnt trust a code to be sitting for 1yr anything outside of ms themselves including places like amazon. took much risk to get the finger

Exactly. A few days ago, yet another SlickDeal alert linked to cdkeys. Thought I was too late, checked anyway, ended up with:
1) Purchase 2x (limit) 3-mo Gold (50 day GPU) for $11.58..
a) Claim Code 1 at redeem.micro$oft dot com, Yes to auto-bill, navigate to account.micro$oft.com, Turn Off auto-bill.
b) Claim Code 2... blah blah blah -> 8 months Gold success.
2) Purchase 1x (only needed to add 1-year), rinse repeat -> 12 months Gold for $17.37.
Wait for next Alert. Wonder why this isn't linked as a 'sticky', or persistant deal.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So just to confirm if we want to max out the 3 years then you should buy 12 of the 3 month cards and redeem ALL 36 months of gold FIRST then do the conversion?

Or should I do the method listed in the other post for the additional months

"Redeem 3 mos, get a free month for
enabling recurring billing. = 4
Disable recurring billing.
Redeem 3 mos, get a free month for
enabling recurring billing. = 8
Disable recurring billing.
Redeem 3 mos, get a free month…etc" ?

I left recurring billing enabled for each code (I used 4) and got 4 additional months. Did not need to disable recurring billing for them to stack up.
I've used the $1 first month GPU promo previously, so I had to pay $15 for 1 month, making the total $36ish for 17 months.

Getting the extra 1 month for recurring billing is not guaranteed, it's YMMV.
I suggest you buy a few Xbox Live Gold codes and redeem them. If you get the extra 1 month, then you don't need to buy too many more to max out to 3 years.

It might, it's YMMV. The only way to know it will work for you is by actually redeeming a code.

I just tried and it did not give me more than the 50 days with recurring billing turned on
