Is this a good deal or is the 1080 a deal breaker? Is it also worth waiting for a legion 7 deal vs the 5?

at 17", it really isn't. of course 1440p/4k will look sharper, but it still has 127 PPI, which is more than your usual 1440p @ 27" (108 PPI). of course, it's your money, so get what makes you happy. sounds like a great price for a laptop with a 3070 though.

The panel in the Walmart L5P is better in every way than this one. 1600p/165hz/500 nits. The 3070 is a 140w TDP as well. I feel like most people's use case will be on the internal screen, so it would make sense to spend slightly more and get the upgrade, but that's totally subjective.

Card is a bit underpowered for 1600p AAA gaming imo, especially in 1-2 years, I prefer 1080p on laptops for that reason. I like to keep my gaming laptops 2-3 years typically.

I have this with the 2560x1600 screen and it is one of the best designed/built laptops on the market.

Video Card: It is not desktop-grade, but it's far better than I expected and easily powers all games at max resolution. Some AAA games cannot get to 165hz, but are playable at ~100fps without sacrifice.
TouchPad: The touchpad is very large and roomy, but I do find it too sensitive and easy to hit at times, so I turn it off when gaming with a mouse.
Heat: The heat dissipation is amazing as it exhausts everywhere you are not, so hands don't get particularly warm, nor do you knees.
Battery: This laptop is intended to be plugged in. You can literally watch the battery percentage drop while it's sitting idle - it's enough for an hour or two. I realize it would be twice the weight if they had a put in a proper battery and I wouldn't want that. But it does mean that I usually throw my SurfaceBook in the bag with it for casual use.
Charging: This comes with a massive 300w brick, but it can be powered up to 100w using a USB-C charger which is enough to keep it topped off during normal use. Some heavy gaming does deplete the battery on power, but you could still game all day with it,just know the battery will be supplementing power.

Overall I am very happy with the laptop and would definitely recommend it over most others in its class.

Definitely an opinion type thing. I was very comfortable playing RDR2 on mine with some lowered details, usually managing 110-120fps. DLSS is a hell of a tool when it comes to letting Nvidia cards punch above their weight.
