Walmart.com has Schwinn Axum Large frame (19") mountain bike in black and blue for $348.
That's a $100 savings from the regular price.
Shipping is free

This one one of the best value entry level hardtails. The components are less than ideal but the frame is upgradable. You can ride it as is, and upgrade the components in the future. Check out various reviews on youtube on this bike.
The only downside of this deal is that the frame is only in large size, good for someone around 6 foot tall.
If you are around 6' tall and want to try mountain biking and don't want to spend too much money on it, this is the bike you might consider.

Some of the features:
- 29" 2.6 wheels
- tapered head tube
- 1 by 8 drivetrain (cassette)
- mechanical disk brakes
- internal cable routing for the seat dropper post

This is a well spec'd bike at $449. with hydro disc brakes, Shimano drive train, Suntour front susp. w/lockout, vs many no name parts on the WalMart bike.

That whole page never calls the fork by its name. The groupset is all Microshift's lowest end stuff. No internal cable routing, not dropper post ready. It's a fine bike for the price, but it's not far and away better than the Schwinn Axum.

Old school geometry and non-boost spacing and non-tapered head tube. Their road bikes and single speed bikes are decent (I own an SS uno) but their mountain bike frames have outdated geometry.

Look at the photo to see the fork name/model, it's a SR Suntour M3030. Microshift is miles better than Tourney, Axum is using generic no name hubs, headset, bar, seat post and no name mechanical brakes. No name wheels too. FYI, the Axium has EXTERNAL cable routing (look at the pic). Is the Axum a decent bike? Maybe, but for another $100. with the BD bike you get much better components including hydro brakes.

  • Tape/Gripunbranded grips (NOT WTB as shown)
  • SaddleYBT MTB unbranded saddle (NOT WTB as shown
Looks like you can't really go by the photo. I'm sure whatever it is, it's a fine fork, but again, it is not named and you don't know what you're getting.

I have the Axum, the derailleur isn't a tourney, its an Altus copy and it's actually very decent and shifts as well as the Altus (I have it on another bike). The stock brakes are decent, I've used them at a bike park (though I have SRAM 4-pistons im going to put on). The Axum has internal seat post routing.

The frame has a 67.8 HTA and 73.5 STA, which very modern for a hardtail. It can also fit 29x2.6" tires rear and 29x2.8" front stock, something which most big brand hard tails can do. The frame is the most important part of the bike and the Bikes direct bike has a very outdated geometry and a non-tapered headtube. I put a boost Markhour on my Axum along with a 36 mm thru axle wheel and upgraded to DHF 29x3.0 front and 29x2.4" rear tire and even with stock brakes and groupset I was able to handle a bike park (never dropped the chain once). I have since upgraded to Advent X and about to upgrade the brakes to the SRAM hydraulics and its basically a Trek Roscoe for $800 less.

I ride blue and black trails in So Cal (not to mention bike park) where climbing can be as high as 2k feet on a 10 mile ride. I had a bike like the Bikes direct and the Axum climbs WAY way better stock and is much more confident on descents. If you've never tried a modern geometry bike you can't say anything because the advantages are real.

Also the Axum has 30 mm width wheels front and rear, something which most big brand bikes don't even come with - they are tubeless ready.

I'll take proven brand components any day over no name cheepo's. I've never heard any rider talk about "outdated" geometry. We ride trails in N Cal with roots, rocks, and trees and not bike parks.

With the expense of all of those upgrades, you should've just bought a Roscoe in the first place for resale value alone.

I have, I ride with people with 5-7k mountain bikes who upgrade frequently (one guy has changed his bikes 3 times in less than two years). Most of my riding is roots, rocks and trees also - watch videos of Santiago Canyon and Bonelli. Modern geometry makes climbing and descending much, much better. Again, I had a bike with near identical geometry to the bikes direct one and despite the Axum actually weighing 1 pound more, it's significantly faster in climbing and the slacker head tube angle makes it faster on descents also.

Roscoe has outdated geometry compared to the Axum. I had a friend who had a Roscoe laugh at me when I got the Axum - then he saw it in person and never talked trash again because he paid $2000 for his Roscoe and it had a worst geometry.

Check out KevCentral on YouTube. He has a series about this exact bike and does a lot of Walmart bike upgrades. He's a good watch.
