While some dogs can be allergic to corn, the most common allergy among dogs is to a protein source. If you are trying to identify why your dog has itchy skin talk to your vet. They will recommend trying a hypoallergenic diet or a novel protein diet for a few months and then slowly add back in different proteins to identify which is the problem. Grains are healthy for dogs to eat and should not be avoided. Grain free diets have been linked to a severe heart issue called dilated cardiomyopathy. Be sure to consult with your vet before eliminating food from your dogs diet.

Dog Food Advisor is not scientifically determined and veterinary nutritionists do not support their inconsistent amateur methodology. The site frequently misinterprets data like ingredients, scientific consensus, and regulations. They lean into fear-based skepticism on ingredients that have no credible reason to be avoided.

Also many don't realize the doctor who runs the site is a human dentist.

I was feeding my Shiba those high end brands too. I hopped on this deal last week because my funds were low. My Shiba loves this, cleans her whole bowl instantly. She was never very fond of the expensive stuff, usually lost interest by day 3. All my dogs love this stuff, which is sometimes a red flag to me to be honest; it makes me think of "fast food" ingredients.

I think your Shiba will love this, as for whether her health and body react positively is another question.

This is what I've been told as well. For my purebred mutt, it's chicken and beef that cause him to itch. Salmon and fish seem much better and lamb doesn't bother him too badly. I just recently received some fancy beef raw food and while he loves eating it, I do notice the itching coming on. Everyone has said protein is the most common cause of itching.

Dog food advisor gives most Kirkland dog food good ratings, but I would check to see how the specific one you buy is rated. Costco sells that Nutro Nugget stuff and it's inexpensive but I would check to see the rating. The higher priced ones at Costco get the better ratings. However that said, I've had some vets say Kirkland is pretty low quality stuff. So my advise I guess: do more research.

When your switch dog foods be sure to do it gradually. A few days at 75% old food then 25% new. Then 50/50, 25/75 and then 100% new. It doesn't need to be exact but this will help prevent diarrhea and vomiting as your dogs stomach adjusts to the new food.

We use to feed our dogs the "boutique" foods and then the whole DCM thing came up and all 3 of our goldens were dangerously low on their levels. We since switched to proplan and their levels are great. I always keep a cheap bag of food on hand to spoil them as treats of something different in their kongs. Grabbed a bag for the price, if we don't use it I'll at least donate it.

Grains in & of themselves are not harmful, but they are unquestionably cheap filler in commercial dog food (i.e. diminishing return for the consumers' buck).

And yep, protein source can definitely cause issues. I've got 2 dogs. The same protein source yields wildly different results. Using chicken as an example, cooked/raw they both do fine. Most 'high end' brands (e.g. Wellness Core; Natures Instinct) they do fine. Middle of the road stuff (e.g. Blue Wilderness) one dog starts to itch/lick and the other is fine, but then cheap stuff like Chewy brand and they're both itching like mofos. (The 'common' denominator in all those examples being grain-free, primary ingredient chicken recipe.)

Unsurprisingly, you get what you pay for. Any type of kibble is like trying to feed your (human) kid 'healthy' protein bars for breakfast, lunch & dinner. It's not practical but it's very convenient. Not much different with our pets. Getting lost in grain vs. grain-free diets and the spotty science all around is missing the forest for the trees.

I agree, hard to find deals on Pro Plan. My local Pet Supplies Plus has had different versions of Pro Plan on clearance lately, so you could check in store if you have one.
