Could I use this for top soil on my lawn? Recently had our sewer line fixed, and the dug out 7ft down, then put it back, but now it's got a few feet of clay on top

Can you explain that for me.
The city didn't give us any info, they literally just came out, excavated down to the pipe, replaced it, and then dumped the dirt back down, and planted grass seed and hay on top of it.
The grass seed they planted is crap, and barely growing.

normally potting compost is quite expensive and you'd save it for ... potting.

if you're anywhere near me, nothing much has grown since may because of the drought plus heat. for your lawn, an inch or less of this compost would act as soil conditioning and provide mulch.

Thanks for the info,
What is a cheaper alternative instead of this to boost growth for our lawn?
I think mostly it's just the clay that's preventing growth, we're on the east coast and the rest of the undisturbed lawn has been having rampant growth, need to mow every 2 weeks

sounds like you have enough water. the only thing cheaper is top soil by the cubic yard from a local supplier. rent a pickup for $20 if you don't have one.

Potting soil has wood chips, rocks(perlite)and other things to facilitate draining and reduce compaction for pots. You probably want topsoil, or garden soil at best. You can buy it by the cubic foot for usually around 2 dollars or so. Can get a cubic yard (27 bags) usually about 25 to 40 bucks. But remember it's heavy and bag have the luxury of placing just what you need and left over is contained, get some rapid grass water light till with rake spread seed cover with straw if you want.

Rapid grass tends to have amendment in it to facilitate growth, if you don't mind clover it's great for starting growth
