The reduction was for the XLR8 3 series not this one and the reduction was not retroactive to ones bought earlier.

They didn't change the electronics just the rating which was much higher than anything comparable when it first came out. The mining warranty repairs likely bit them. So, the ones bought earlier and the ones bought later will have the same endurance except the warranty would run out sooner for later ones. Unless you are mining 24x7, no consumer SSD runs out of wear numbers before the years are up.

Shouldn't be confused with the model in this thread.

I bought this one but then found this article saying they totally screwed us by cutting endurance on these up to 78%

https://www.tomshardware.com/news...fpIZPQ4izo

I'm currently using it (wasn't able to return in time) and it works fine but obviously always concerned about this wear level issue

Not bad, my Samsung 980 PRO 2 TB stated read is 7,000.
But loading a game it means only a few seconds in difference.
Go for the price.

Kind of a mixed bag. It is QLC but has a small amount of DRAM.

Recommend the cheaper dramless TLC for light use, dram TLC for peformance or heavy use.

It's out of stock now on Gamestop.
As for the endurance it says it has 2M Hour MTFB and should have at least 2yr warranty.
Gamestop had the best price after 10% cashback from that place that begins with R.

I bought a wd black sn770 gen4 1tb for 110 as my main laptop storage to dual boot Linux and windows. Is this a better value or just keep my current nvme drive?

Thanks! I know the 980 is Gen4 so it will be faster than a Gen3 drive, so 7,000 read vs. the 3,500 read is pretty substantial. However it seems Gen3 vs. Gen4 at the moment is pretty negotiable. It seems Gen4 is best/required in PS5.

I grabbed one of these at Gamestop for $130, I think you're right about going for the price. I'm installing it in a G15 so perhaps I can swap it to the second SSD slot when Gen4 drives become much cheaper.

I'm certain you would never notice the difference, outside of benchmarking apps. And it might be nice if you need more space, but it's your money and your decision.

So if I get this for an external thunderbolt enclosure that uses Thunderbolt 3 (for my MBA M2), there would be absolutely no advantage to getting one of the faster SSDs (ie samsung 980 pro), right? I'm thinking that the TB3 interface will already be saturated by the speed of this one so it's a waste of money to upgrade. Am i thinking about this correctly?
